TPDF soldiers in Sudan for Darfur mission (14.08.2009)

An advance party of Tanzanian soldiers has arrived in Darfur to boost peacekeeping operations under a joint African Union-United Nations mission. It was announced in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the 200-strong Tanzania People's Defence Forces contingent arrived in the strife-torn region of Sudan on Wednesday.

Some 200 Tanzanian troops arrived today in El-Fasher the capital of north Darfur to boost the deployment of the hybrid peacekeeping mission in the war ravaged region. This group is the advance party of a Tanzanian Battalion that is expected to arrive in the Mission by mid September. They will be deployed in Khor Abeche and Muhajeria in South Darfur.

 


More Burkina Faso troops arrive in Darfur (12.08.2009)

The second batch of the advance party of the infantry battalion from Burkina Faso, consisting of 133 personnel, arrived today in Nyala capital of South Darfur to join the hybrid peacekeeping operation in Darfur (UNAMID). The advance party will be joining the 134 personnel that arrived last week.

More Ugandan police deployed in Darfur (10.08.2009)

Some 38 additional Ugandan police officers arrived today joining the Darfur hybrid peacekeeping mission (UNAMID). A group of South African police is also scheduled to arrive in Darfur this week, while Police officers from Bangladesh, Germany, Philippines, Tajikistan and Zambia are currently in Khartoum awaiting deployment to Darfur.

 


Advance group of second Ethiopian battalion arrives in Darfur (06.08.2009)

The first batch of the advance party of the Ethiopian Infantry Battalion comprising 151 personnel arrived today and a further 151 will arrive tomorrow, the UNMAID said today. The UNAMID pledged to reach 97% troops deployment in Darfur by the end of the year. … The main body of the Ethiopian battalion is expected to arrive in Darfur in September or October. When fully deployed, they will number some 800 soldiers.

The Obama administration's Sudan envoy is facing growing resistance to a suggestion he made recently to civilians displaced from Darfur that they should start planning to go back to their villages. Darfurian civilians and U.N. relief agencies say it is still too dangerous to return to the region where a six-year-long conflict has led to the deaths of more than 300,000 people.

The African Union-United Nations peacekeeping operation in Darfur has provided a financial boost of almost $250,000 for the construction of classrooms, toilets and water pumps in the violence-ridden region of Sudan. Henry Anyidoho, Deputy Joint Special Representative of the AU-UN mission (UNAMID), presented the Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) funding, which will also cover the construction of an x-ray wing for a local hospital, to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) yesterday on his visit to South Darfur.

Darfur peace process is expected to resume during the next month of August, said the head of Sudanese government delegation to Doha talks on Friday. President Obama’s special envoy for Sudan says a negotiated political settlement to the civil strife in Sudan is the only way to bring a sustainable peace to the Darfur region. … Previous peace efforts have faltered, Gration testified before a Senate committee July 30, and the United States has learned from those experiences. Gration laid out for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee what he called a “whole-of-government approach” for Sudan that is designed to be integrated and comprehensive.

Aid workers and officials are calling for a scaling-up in peacekeeping efforts in Sudan's western Darfur region. “Darfur may appear calmer, but one has to remember that there are fewer reports coming out because they are deeply nervous of how the Sudanese government will react to criticism,” said one international aid worker, who has spent more than two years in Darfur. … A coalition of 22 NGOs warned on 29 July that more support was needed to ensure peacekeepers were able to protect civilians.

Civil society groups operating in Sudan’s Darfur region will be allowed to carry out unhindered voter education activities ahead of national elections scheduled for next year, the joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping mission to Darfur (UNAMID) reported today. UNAMID said the National Elections Commission (NEC) has given an assurance to the mission that the civic organizations can conduct voter education without restriction or interference from either Sudan’s National Intelligence Security Service (NISS) or the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC).

 


Sierra Leone sends peacekeepers to Darfur (28.07.2009)

Sierra Leone is to send its first peacekeeping mission to Darfur in December, the contingent commander said on Monday following a United Nations inspection visit to the West African state. "The contingent is committed by the government of Sierra Leone to contribute to the UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur, and we have already an advance team of 50 soldiers," said Lieutenant Colonel Seth Marah.

Northern Darfur Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been included in the electoral constituencies in order to allow them to participate in 2010 elections, the state committee said today. Sudan electoral commission announced last week that the demarcation had been completed in the 15 northern Sudan states besides Eastern and Western Equatoria states in southern Sudan.

 


UN demobilizes first batch of child soldiers in Darfur (27.07.2009)

Thirty-six child soldiers who once served with an armed rebel movement in Sudan’s Darfur region have been voluntarily demobilized and given assistance so they can return to school and their communities, the United Nations reported today. The joint African Union-UN peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) has provided logistical support to the Darfur Child Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which are spearheading the demobilization initiative.

People in the Darfur region of Sudan could be left out of next year's election, according to the head of the United Nations peacekeeping force. Alain Le Roy said millions might not get to vote because of a dispute over a new census and large scale displacement of people caused by the conflict. Mr Le Roy said this would disenfranchise people already disempowered by the fighting. But he also said the security situation in Darfur had improved substantially.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), extended today the mandate of United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) for one year. The AU Peace and Security Council "has renewed, without change, the UNAMID (UN-African Union Mission in Darfur) mandate for 12 months, beginning July 31, and asked that the UN do the same," AU spokesperson Al-Ghassim Wane, said on Tuesday.

Gen Patrick Nyanvumba has beaten other candidates from Nigeria and Ethiopia to be selected the overall Force Commander of thee peacekeeping mission in the troubled region of Darfur, Sudan. … The General who starts work on the 10th of September for a period of one year is the second Rwanda top army officer to be appointed in top leadership positions of the UNAMID forces.

 


Blue helmets think green – UNAMID embarks on tree-planting exercise (21.07.2009)

As part of its efforts to enhance and develop the physical environment in the Mission area, UNAMID today commenced planting trees at its headquarters in El Fasher. An initial 50 seedlings were planted during today's exercise and it is expected that the project will culminate in December when the goal of 1,000 trees will be planted in all UNAMID compounds.

Tomorrow, UNAMID Police Commissioner, Michael Fryer, will lead UNAMID police and civilian staff members on a four-day long range patrol from El-Fasher to Kabkabiya and back, covering a distance of more than 300 kilometres. The patrol is being conducted as part of the Mission's efforts to establish stronger communication with Darfurians and to monitor the situation of returnees on the ground, especially those from Chad.

A major rebel group in Darfur has let 60 prisoners go, says the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Fifty-five of the prisoners were from the armed forces while the other five were from the police, the ICRC said. They were released by the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) to the ICRC, and then handed over to the Sudanese authorities in Kutum, in North Darfur. The handover is one of the biggest since the bitter conflict in Darfur began in 2003.

A rebel group denied reports over its participation in Cairo talks to unite the positions of seven Darfur groups ahead of their participation in the peace negotiations in Doha Qatar next month. The Sudan Liberation Movement of Ahmed Abdel Shafi, known as SLM-Juba faction dismissed its participation in a meeting held in the Egyptian capital earlier this week. "Our movement was not a party to the Cairo meetings," Al-Hadi Idriss, the head of Political Department in the rebel group told Sudan Tribune, before adding that Egypt was not serious in its efforts to end the Darfur conflict.

 


Egypt holds talks with Darfur rebels in push for unity (13.07.2009)

Egypt began a round of talks Saturday with several Darfur rebel groups to try to persuade them to return to peace negotiations with Sudan’s government. Darfur’s most powerful rebel group, however, was not taking part in the meetings in Egypt. The splintering of Darfur’s rebels into a growing number of groups with differing agendas has complicated efforts to end the conflict.

The hybrid peacekeeping mission aims to have 95 percent of its troops deployed in Sudan’s Darfur region by end-year, a UN senior official said today. Officials from Sudan’s government, African Union and United Nations on Sunday held their sixth meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism on UNAMID. They mainly discussed the deployment of the mandated number of 26,000 troops and related issues.

Peacekeepers in Sudan's Darfur region are still struggling to get hold of vital helicopters more than 18 months after arriving because of competition from other conflict zones, a senior U.N. official said on Sunday. The joint United Nations/African Union UNAMID force currently has no military helicopters, despite high-profile appeals for countries to provide them, said Susana Malcorra, head of field support for the UN.
