A Sudanese court has sentenced to death 10 rebels from the Darfur region over an unprecedented attack on the capital, Khartoum, in May last year. The members of the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) were found guilty of treason, violence against the state and illegal possession of weapons.

The prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) say that they expect a ruling on the case against Darfur rebels in April. The deputy ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda speaking a the diplomatic hearing last week said in The Hague said that her office hopes “to have a decision from the Judges this month”.

Darfur former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) said acting to transform their group into political party in order to take part in the next year general elections. The SLM led by Minni Minnawi signed Darfur Peace Agreement with the Sudanese government in 2006. However the former rebels showed till recently opposition to the election asking to reach a comprehensive peace deal before.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has rejected any new regional initiatives to achieve peace in Darfur saying efforts by neighbor states aim to save the Sudanese President and put aside the suffering of the affected civilians in the war torn region. Egypt and Libya have recently staged a series of contacts with Darfur rebel groups to see how they can contribute to reach a negotiated solution for the six year conflict in Darfur.

Sudan has dismissed accusation of harboring Chadian opposition describing it as "false accusations", meanwhile Khartoum spoke about buildup of Chadian troops near the border. Relations between the two countries remain very unpredictable despite three reconciliation agreements brokered by different countries.

The joint United Nations-African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s war-ravaged Darfur region today reported that the security situation is now relatively calm despite some continuing acts of banditry and carjacking in North and West Darfur. Over the past month, the hybrid operation tasked with quelling the violence and protecting civilians in Darfur, known as UNAMID, had reported a rise in attacks on peacekeeping staff, carjacking, armed banditry, the burning of shelters in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and harassment of civilians in Darfur.

Some 21 political leader and military commander from the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) – Unity announced yesterday their merger with the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), joining a first group that merged with JEM recently. Formed by SLM commanders who defected from the former rebel leader Minni Minnawi after the signing of Darfur Peace Agreement in 2006, the leader of the group Abdallah Yahya failed, despite the respect he had among the military commanders, to impose his authority with a clear political vision.

The Ethiopian government has agreed to provide the African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID) with 5 tactical helicopters. The 26,000-member UNAMID force needs 24 helicopters including 18 transport and six tactical helicopters to operate effectively across the Darfur region, which is as big as France, and to move the supplies and equipment necessary to carry out its mandate.

The Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and African Union in Darfur, Rodolphe Adada, met Wednesday in the capital of North Darfur state with ex-rebel leader Minni Minnawi to discuss greater cooperation with the regional authority established as part of a peace deal signed at Abuja in 2006. Minni Minnawi, now a Senior Presidential Assistant and the head of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority (TDRA), travelled at the end of March to Al Fasher for talks with state officials.

Sudan's embattled president told a rally Tuesday that his own officials would track down war criminals in Darfur, dismissing Western attempts to bring justice to the region. An international arrest warrant against Sudan's president has made little impact on the security in the conflict-torn Darfur region, an envoy for the UN and African Union said here Monday. "Contrary to the majority of alarmist scenarios and analyses these last few months, this decision has not had a major impact in terms of security, nor has it sparked more violence," AU special representative Rodolphe Adada told the body's peace and security council in the Ethiopian capital.

Darfur rebel veteran Suleiman Jamous said he decided to join the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) to motivate the other rebel groups to reunite and leave aside their personal ambitions. Jamous, who was one of the Sudan Liberation Movement’s (SLM) key figures and its humanitarian official during the more difficult years of the Darfur crisis, announced this week his merger with JEM. He was followed by some 30 commanders and 500 fighters from the SLM-Unity.

Representatives of the Government of Sudan, the African Union and the United Nations met today in Darfur to discuss ways to facilitate and expedite deployment of the joint peacekeeping force tasked with quelling the violence in the strife-torn region. Participants at the fifth meeting of the Tripartite Committee on the AU-UN peacekeeping operation in Darfur (UNAMID) noted that the deployment of military forces, including troops, officers and military observers, has reached 67 per cent as of the end of March.

The hybrid United Nations-African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in Darfur, known as UNAMID, received a boost today from the arrival of 100 personnel from the second Egyptian Infantry Battalion. Another 100 troops from the battalion are slated to arrive tomorrow in the strife-torn western flank of Sudan as a meeting of the Tripartite Committee – comprising the Government of Sudan, the AU and the UN – is scheduled to take place for the first time in Darfur.

Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir said on Thursday he would welcome new humanitarian "partners" in the troubled Darfur province after Sudan this month threw out 13 Western aid agencies. The Sudanese government, which expelled the agencies soon after the International Criminal Court ordered Beshir's arrest, "is ready to welcome new partners under the agreement between Sudan and the United Nations," a statement said.

Egypt will send 40 doctors to the western Sudan region to fill the gap resulted of the expulsion of 13 aid groups working there, the Egyptian foreign ministry said today. The announcement comes one day after a visit by the Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir to Cairo where he discussed with President Hosni Mubarak the humanitarian crisis and efforts to bring peace in Darfur as well as the arrest warrant issued against him by the ICC.

Abdel Jabbar Dosa, a prominent figure in the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi announced today his resignation from the Presidency of Darfur Reconstruction and Development Fund and the former rebel group. The move constitutes a new blow to the leader of the sole rebel group that signed the Darfur Peace Agreement in May 2006 with the Sudanese government. Minnawi lost most of his political and military leaders who protest the ill-implementation of the DPA.

A combination of stopgap measures by United Nations agencies and the Sudanese government has kept aid flowing in the world’s largest relief program in Darfur, but the makeshift effort cannot be sustained, John Holmes, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator, said Tuesday. “These are Band-Aid solutions, not long-term solutions,” Mr. Holmes told reporters, summarizing a joint assessment by the United Nations and Sudan last week after the government in Khartoum shut down 16 aid organizations.

A leading rebel commander today joined the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) saying that disunity and divisions among Darfur forces have compromised the cause of the western Sudan region. Adam Ali Shoggar, a former commander of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) signed today in undisclosed area in Darfur a merger agreement with the rebel JEM. According to the accord, Shoggar and his SLM Field-Leadership group are incorporated under the leadership of Khalil Ibrahim.

The president of Sudan has returned to Darfur for a second time since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest over alleged war crimes in the region.
