Three Chadian rebel groups have signed a peace deal with the Ndjamena government in Tripoli under the sponsorship of the Libyan government and regional grouping CEN-SAD, officials said Sunday. The National Movement (MN), a coalition formed by the three groups late last month, signed the deal on Saturday with a government delegation led by chief mediator Abderamane Moussa, Libya's official JANA news agency reported.

Another two tribal communities in eastern Chad have agreed to end their feud and reconcile under a joint initiative of the United Nations peacekeeping mission to the country and the national authorities to promote better community relations. Le Tchad a annoncé dimanche que son aviation a achevé une série de raids aériens sur des "mercenaires" en territoire soudanais et qu'elle avait mis hors de combat sept groupes de rebelles tandis que les troupes ont sol ont fait une centaine de prisonniers près de la frontière. C'est la première fois que N'Djamena reconnaît le recours à ces raids aériens, affirmant qu'ils se justifiaient par le soutien que le gouvernement soudanais aurait fourni à des insurgés qui ont mené une attaque avortée contre l'armée tchadienne la semaine passé.

Chad's government has admitted for the first time sending its armed forces into Sudanese territory. Chad said it had ended air raids against "mercenaries" in Sudan and destroyed seven groups of fighters. Defence Minister Adoum Younousmi said hundreds of prisoners had been taken and would be displayed soon. Sudan began on Thursday to complain of the raids, which Chad said were a justified pursuit of rebels who had entered its territory from Sudan.

Chad’s rebels said they moved inside the eastern part of their country because Sudan told them to evacuate their bases in the troubled region of Darfur and to leave the country. "Based on the Doha agreement signed with the Chadian government, the Sudanese government asked us to leave our bases in Sudanese territory," Acheikh Ibni Oumar, the Union of Resistance Forces (UFR) representative in Europe told Sudan Tribune.

Chad has won a "decisive victory" over rebels in the east of the country, Defence Minister Adoum Younousmi said after two days of fierce fighting. The United Nations peacekeeping force protecting refugees and other civilians in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR) has reached less than half its authorized troop strength, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. “I urge Member States to provide the missing force personnel and enablers, particularly night-capable military helicopters, to ensure the Mission can implement its mandate without constraint,” he wrote in a report to the Security Council made public today.
