Relations between Sudan and Chad appears to be heading toward a deterioration after it accused its western neighbour of supporting a newly formed alliance aiming to oust president Idriss Deby. Rebel sources said that the Union of the resistance forces (UFR) chose Timan Erdimi, a relative of the Chadian president as its leader.

The Security Council today unanimously approved the deployment of some 5,500 United Nations peacekeepers to replace European troops in strife-torn areas of Chad and Central African Republic (CAR) until 15 March 2010. The UN Mission in CAR and Chad (MINURCAT) is scheduled to take over from the European Force on 15 March and the Council largely followed the suggestions made by Sec-retary-General Ban Ki-moon in his latest report on the issue last month.

Norway's government said Tuesday it would send a field hospital staffed with up to 150 people to a planned United Nations mission in eastern Chad and the northeastern Central African Republic. "A Norwegian field hospital for the operation in Chad is of the utmost importance to the UN.
