Chad says 700 killed in February rebel attack (07.03.2008)

(Quelle: Mail and Guardian) Fighting triggered by a rebel assault on Chad's capital, Ndjamena, last month killed about 700 people, President Idriss Déby Itno said in comments broadcast on Thursday. Déby had said 400 civilians were killed in Ndjamena during the fighting a month ago. He told French television station France 24 the new figure included soldiers and those killed in the nearby town of Massaguet.

The incident on Monday in the tri-border region of Chad, Sudan and Central African Republic is the most serious so far to befall the European Union force (EUFOR) that is still being deployed in eastern Chad.

Dutch to send 60 troops to join EU force in Chad (03.03.2008)

(Quelle: Reliefweb) The Netherlands will send around 60 troops to join a European Union security force deploying in eastern Chad and the Central African Republic, the Dutch Foreign and Defence Ministries said on Friday. The deployment will begin mid-April and will last about a year, the ministries said in a joint statement. Another five soldiers will be stationed in headquarters in Paris and the eastern Chadian town of Abeche.

 


Chad launches international commission to look into rebel attack (03.03.2008)

(Quelle: Reliefweb) Chad has established an international commission of inquiry to look into events that took place during and after a failed rebel offensive on the capital N'Djamena in early February, the Chadian national radio reported Monday. The commission, which includes representatives of France, the European Union and the African Union, has also been tasked with the difficult task of unraveling the whereabouts of missing opposition leaders, said the national radio.

About 70 Austrian troops joined the Eufor force on Tuesday, as the UN reported that fresh attacks in Darfur had pushed thousands of new refugees into Chad.

EU force resumes Chad deployment (12.02.2008)

The EUFOR mission said a military transport plane had arrived in the town of Abeche in eastern Chad, and more would follow in the coming days. Their deployment was delayed when rebels attacked the Chad capital.

 


Chad 'cannot take more refugees' (11.02.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) Chad's Prime Minister, Nouradine Delwa Kassire Koumakoye, has said his country cannot absorb any more refugees from the Sudanese region of Darfur. The UN says 12,000 people fled into Chad over the weekend after attacks on villages in Darfur by Sudanese forces pursuing rebel fighters. 'We are simply demanding that they be moved, otherwise we will do it,' Mr Koumakoye said. He accuses Sudan of being behind last week's failed coup attempt by rebels.

 


Chad imposes curfew as rebels regroup (08.02.2008)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Chad’s government on Thursday slapped a night curfew on Ndjamena and southern provinces as rebels who almost ousted President Idriss Deby Itno regrouped and rearmed after battling for the capital. Deby claims he controls the whole country, but a military source said the rebel alliance driven out of Ndjamena after a heavy weekend of fighting met up with reinforcements about 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the city.

Govt controls Chadian capital as French planes monitor eastern border (06.02.2008)

'Today, the city of Ndjamena is under (government) control, at least within a 10-kilometre (six-mile) radius,' French ambassador Bruno Foucher told reporters in Ndjamena.

 


Chad: new danger zones for UN workers (05.02.2008)

Rebels pull back from Chad's capital after attack (04.02.2008)

Leaders of the group that attacked N'Djamena in gun-mounted pickup trucks said they had pulled back to give civilians a chance to leave, and claimed to still control two key bridges heading into town, the Associated Press reported Monday.

 


EU still plans to send peacekeepers to Chad, despite unrest (04.02.2008)

'Today the situation is still not clear, but we continue to maintain the operation,' Solana told reporters in Brussels. 'Of course we are not going to continue the deployment as it started, we stopped it for the last few days in order to see how the situation evolves on the ground, but our wish is to maintain the operation,' he added.
