Austria to send 160 troops to EU mission in Chad (09.11.2007)

The Austrian mission, which will include special combat units, medical and logistic personnel and patrols, will serve a preliminary six-month term, which can be extended for no longer than six months, said Darabos.

 


Libya seals peace deal for Chad (26.10.2007)

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi hosted the talks alongside the presidents of Chad and Sudan. The insurgent groups have waged an on-off rebellion against Chadian President Idriss Deby for years. The fighting was linked to the conflict plaguing the neighbouring Sudanese region of Darfur.

 


Chad rebels battle army in east (19.10.2007)

(Quelle: BBC) There has been heavy fighting in eastern Chad along the border with Sudan two days after a state of emergency was declared in the region. Soldiers and fighters of the United Front for Democratic Change, a rebel group which has agreed to disarm, clashed in Goz Beida town. Some 500 rebels, who were waiting to be integrated into the national army, abandoned their posts last week. Some 3,000 European peacekeepers are due in the region in the coming weeks.

 


Chad: state of emergency imposed even as peace talks conclude (16.10.2007)

EU approves deployment of Darfur force in Chad and CAR (16.10.2007)

Chad says peace deal definitive but rebels quibble (06.10.2007)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Chad said on Friday a peace deal signed in Libya with four rebel groups, which promises government posts in return for a ceasefire, was definitive but rebel leaders said there were differences over disarmament. … The deal, which must be signed by Chadian President Idriss Deby, calls for an amnesty and a role for rebels in government in return for a ceasefire and the integration of their forces in the army of the landlocked central African state.

 


Chad Arab rebel group signs peace deal with Deby (02.10.2007)

CAR: government welcomes UN Mission but urges more aid (01.10.2007)

Addressing the General Assembly's annual high-level debate, CAR Minister for Foreign Affairs Côme Zoumara hailed the adoption of Security Council resolution 1778. … At the same time, he stressed that the operation, to be known as MINURCAT, must be accompanied by real support to reinforce the CAR's own institutional capacities.

 


Österreich beteiligt sich an geplanter EU-Mission (01.10.2007)

(Quelle: Der Standard (Wien)) Einen offiziellen Namen hat die geplante EU-Mission zum Schutz sudanesischer Flüchtlinge im Tschad noch nicht - einen Zeitplan gibt es aber schon: Wenn alles wie geplant läuft, wird die Truppe in Afrika spätestens zu Silvester die volle Einsatzbereitschaft hergestellt haben. Mit dabei sollen etwa 60 österreichische Jagdkommando-Soldaten, ein San-Element und möglicherweise ein Trupp mit einer Trinkwasseraufbereitungsanlage des Bundesheeres sein. Beim EU-Verteidigungsministertreffen Ende letzter Woche wurde festgestellt, dass vor allem im medizinischen Bereich, aber auch bei Hubschraubern ein Engpass vorliegt.

 


Les Européens se mobilisent en faveur de la force militaire pour le Tchad (29.09.2007)

Contrairement aux inquiétudes exprimées dans différentes capitales, il ne devrait pas être trop difficile de mobiliser l'équivalent de trois bataillons (environ 3 000 hommes) pour la force européenne qui rejoindra l'est du Tchad et le nord de la Centrafrique avant la fin de l'année pour appuyer la force ONU-UA. Les ministres européens de la défense, réunis, vendredi 28 septembre, à Evora (Portugal), ont souligné que cette opération en faveur des réfugiés du Darfour était légitime, urgente et attendue par leurs opinions publiques respectives.

 


EU Defense ministers build force to protect Darfur refugees (29.09.2007)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) The European Union’s defense ministers have assembled a 2,000-strong force to help protect Darfur refugees in Chad and the Central African Republic, officials said Friday. 'We’re at roughly 2,000,' French Defense Minister Herve Morin said of E.U. member state commitments to the U.N.-mandated force. About 1,500 of those promised troops are French, he said. Paris proposed the contingent in July.

 


France takes the lead on new UN-EU peacekeeping mission (26.09.2007)

(Quelle: Irinnews) France will be the largest single troop contributor to a new joint UN-European Union “multi-dimensional” peacekeeping mission to Chad and Central African Republic authorised by the UN Security Council on 25 September. The former colonial power of both countries already has a military base in Chad and some troops in Central African Republic (CAR). It is expected to contribute about half of the EU force of 3,000 to 4,000 troops to support the new UN Mission, MINURCAT.

 


Security Council approves UN presence in Central African Republic, Chad (25.09.2007)

(Quelle: UN News) The Security Council today established a United Nations-mandated, multidimensional presence, which will include European Union military forces, in eastern Chad and north-eastern Central African Republic (CAR) to help protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid to thousands of people uprooted due to insecurity in the two countries and neighbouring Sudan. … The UN presence will include a UN Mission – to be known by its acronym MINURCAT – with 300 police and 50 military liaison officers, as well as civilian staff, focusing on the areas of civil affairs, human rights, the rule of law and mission support. The Mission will be headquartered in the Chadian capital, N’Djamena.
