(Quelle: UN News) The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste today welcomed a recent report on human rights abuses that took place during the country’s bloody struggle for independence in 1999. The mission, known as UNMIT, also urged the Governments of Timor-Leste and Indonesia to follow up on the recommendations in the report put out last month by the Commission of Truth and Friendship (CTF), established by the two countries in 2005.

He made the statement as he received the final report of their two countries' Truth and Friendship Commission in the resort of Bali. The report details systematic crimes against humanity - and lays much of the blame at the door of Indonesia's army. But the leaders of both countries say they are interested in moving on.

East Timor's police force disintegrated in Dili during a spate of political violence two years ago. Security reform has been an important issue for the tiny South-East Asian country, which witnessed violent clashes that erupted in 2006 and, in February of this year, attacks on the Timorese President and Prime Minister.

Indonesia returns East Timor rebels (05.05.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) Four men accused of involvement in armed attacks on East Timor's president and prime minister have been extradited from Indonesia. Police escorted the men onto a plane in Jakarta, for the journey via Bali to East Timor's capital, Dili. The alleged rebels were arrested at two separate locations in Indonesia in the wake of the attacks in February.

 


East Timor rebel leader surrenders (29.04.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) The leader of a group of rebels accused of trying to assassinate East Timor's president has surrendered. Gastao Salsinha and 11 other rebels handed themselves in to Deputy Prime Minister Jose Luis Guterres at the government palace in the capital, Dili. Mr Guterres described the surrender as a 'historic moment' for East Timor.

 


Surrender ends troops' rebellion (29.04.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) The surrender of Gastao Salsinha brings an end to the armed insurrection that broke out two years ago in East Timor. It was Mr Salsinha who led nearly 600 disaffected soldiers - about a third of the army - to desert their posts in February 2006, complaining of discrimination against people from the west.

 


Australian troops in Timor-Leste return to pre-11 February 2008 levels (28.04.2008)

(Quelle: Reliefweb) Australia will withdraw the additional 200 troops deployed to Timor Leste following the attacks on 11 February on President Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Gusmao. This means a rifle company group from the Third Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment will not be replaced when it completes its tour of duty on 27 April.

 


East Timor lifts emergency rule (22.04.2008)

According to Reuters, parliament speaker Fernando de Araujo said that East Timor's parliament voted to lift the emergency rule which was imposed in February following attacks on the country's top leaders.

 


Indonesia arrests East Timor rebels (18.04.2008)

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the suspects were all former Timorese soldiers who had crossed the border between the two countries illegally.

East Timor militia leader released (08.04.2008)

Eurico Guterres had been sentenced to 10 years for his role in the killings of 12 people as East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia. But judges in the Indonesia capital Jakarta overturned his conviction and freed him after two years in jail.

 


East Timor to use force against rebels – army (04.04.2008)

(Quelle: Reliefweb) East Timor will launch a military operation next week to capture fugitive rebel soldiers believed to have been involved in an assassination attempt on President Jose Ramos-Horta, the army chief said on Fridady. The operation, involving 2,000 troops and police, would be launched on Wednesday unless the rebels gave themselves up, said Brigadier-General Taur Matan Ruak.

East Timor calls for international inquiry into assassination attempts (04.03.2008)

(Quelle: Asia-Pacific Daily Report) A senior rebel suspected of being involved in recent attacks on East Timor's (Timor-Leste) two top leaders surrendered on Sunday (March 2), East Timorese officials said. East Timor's parliament called for an international inquiry into the attacks. A resolution passed by lawmakers called for help from the UN to establish a commission to investigate the shootings. According to the Associated Press, Australian and American investigators working with the UN would lead the inquiry.

 


Timorese fugitive surrenders as UN mission continues for another year (25.02.2008)

The 15-member body took that action, which had already been agreed upon in consultations, only hours after UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) announced the surrender of a fugitive belonging to an opposition militia accused of participating in that violence as well as attacks on the Timorese President and Prime Minister on 11 February.
