Innerhalb eines Jahres will die Bundesregierung die Zahl der in Afghanistan stationierten deutschen Polizisten verdreifachen. Sie sollen vor allem einheimische Kräfte ausbilden. Wie es mit den deutschen Soldaten in Afghanistan weitergeht, wird heftig diskutiert. In der Bevölkerung wächst der Unmut über den Einsatz.

Der Bundestag hat grünes Licht für den Einsatz der Nato-Awacs-Maschinen in Afghanistan gegeben. Mit großer Mehrheit beschlossen die Abgeordneten, dass sich die Bundeswehr an der neuen Isaf-Mission beteiligen kann. Bis zu 300 Soldaten sollen sich künftig an der Überwachung des afghanischen Luftraums beteiligen.

The US army says it has launched a major offensive against the Taliban in south Afghanistan's Helmand province. The US military says about 4,000 Marines as well as 650 Afghan troops are involved, supported by Nato planes. Brigadier General Larry Nicholson said the operation was different from previous ones because of the "massive size of the force" and its speed.

The beautiful district of Jabulsaraj, located at the foot of the Hindu Kush mountains was today announced as a peace district. A total of 30 light weapons, belonging to six illegal armed groups were handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) authorities. With Jabulsaraj, the number of peace districts, a term used for districts that are free of illegal weaponry, is now at 77 districts.

Civilian deaths resulting from armed hostilities between insurgents, the US military, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and government forces have increased by 24 percent so far this year compared to the same period in 2008, according to a report by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. In May alone, 261 non-combatants lost their lives in conflict in Afghanistan, John Holmes, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told members of the Security Council at a meeting on 26 June.

The United States is to change the way it deals with the massive poppy growing industry in Afghanistan. Instead of destroying the crops it will spend money encouraging Afghan farmers to grow different ones. US special envoy to Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke, at a G8 meeting in Italy, said current measures against poppy growers had been "a failure".

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called on the Taliban and their allies on June 27 to vote in August's elections rather than attempt to disrupt the nation's second presidential poll. The August 20 vote is seen as a crucial moment for Karzai's government and for Washington, which is sending thousands of extra troops this year as part of President Barack Obama's new regional strategy to defeat Al-Qaeda and stabilize Afghanistan.

 


Russia says U.S.-led forces should stem Afghan heroin (26.06.2009)

A top Russian drugs official has said Moscow should stop the transport of cargo across its territory to U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan if they do not do more to cut the flow of heroin to Russia. Earlier this year, Russia and its former Soviet allies in Central Asia established a transit route for nonlethal supplies to the international forces in Afghanistan to complement a dangerous route via Pakistan.

Russia welcomes "increasingly transparent" U.S. policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan and sees new areas of cooperation with the West in settling the Afghan conflict, the Kremlin's senior foreign policy adviser has said. Afghanistan is expected to become a major topic at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on June 15. Afghanistan's electoral authority has unveiled a final list of 41 candidates for the country's August 20 presidential poll.
