Security sector reform is failing, says french think-tank (05.10.2008)

(Quelle: allAfrica) The reform of the DRCs security sector involving the UN, the EU, the US, South Africa, Angola and many other players is failing to meet its objectives, according to a new report from the Paris-based Institut français des relations internationales. So far the reform has not produced any substantial improvement in buttressing the rule of law, financial control, the fight against corruption, the independence of the judiciary or in restructuring.

 


Congo's Nkunda not planning national war –spokesman (04.10.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) A Democratic Republic of Congo minister has challenged a report claiming a rise in the recruitment of child soldiers and rape in the east of the country. Defence Minister Chikez Diemu said authorities were tackling the problems, arresting suspects and trying them in military courts. The report by Amnesty International said that for every two child soldiers released, five were being recruited.

 


DR Congo calls on UN to use force to impose peace on rebel holdouts in east (29.09.2008)

(Quelle: UN News) Fighting continues to rage in the North Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) between Government forces and rebels, the United Nations peacekeeping mission to the country reported today as it stepped up efforts to stabilize the volatile region. A reinforced platoon of 40 Indian police officers was deployed today in Goma, the provincial capital, to help support Congolese national police in that city, the UN mission – known as MONUC – said in its latest update on the situation in North Kivu.

The violence erupted during protests in Dungu, Orientale province, against LRA attacks which have uprooted thousands from their homes in many areas within a 90 kilometre radius of Dungu, the UN mission in the DRC (MONUC) said in a news release today.

 


Congo warlords sent for trial (26.09.2008)

(Quelle: Washington Post) The International Criminal Court on Friday ordered two Congolese warlords to stand trial on charges including murder, rape and the use of child soldiers for their alleged role in a deadly attack on a village. The case against Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo is only the second sent for trial at the world's first permanent war crimes court. They are accused of leading militias, including child soldiers who attacked the village of Bogoro in eastern Congo in 2003.

According to the UN mission, known as MONUC, heavy fighting took place today between DRC armed forces (FARDC) and the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP) near the town of Sake, located some 20 kilometres from Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.

 


Rwanda: war rages in DRC as government forces seek FDLR support (21.09.2008)

The FDLR are remnants of the former rwandan army (ex FAR) and interahamwe militia who are responsible for the 1994 Genocide of Tutsis that cost the lives of over a million people in Rwanda.

Observers say armed groups on all sides are digging in after clashes between the Congolese army and fighters loyal to Laurent Nkunda, the head of the Congress for the Defence of the Congolese People, CNDP. … Although there have been numerous violations of the Goma ceasefire since it was signed by 22 armed groups, the fighting which occurred on August 28 and again on September 3-4 has been the most serious so far.

Hundreds of trucks and passengers service vehicles are piling up on the Ugandan side of the border, as uncertainty looms, witnesses said yesterday. DRC and Gen. Nkunda forces were on Monday till Tuesday last week involved in fierce gun fights, some 10-15km from the border point with Kisoro District.

The inspector-general of the FARDC has been suspended from duty for shooting a 20-year-old street dweller in Kinshasa, the capital, while FARDC members have carried out armed robberies, extortion and many arbitrary arrests.

UN calls for investigation into clashes in western province (16.06.2008)

(Quelle: UN News) A team led by the UN Office for Human Rights was deployed in Bas Congo province in March to prepare a report on the violent incidents between the Congolese National Police (PNC) and the Bundu Dia Kongo (BDK) armed group. The report, which was released on Friday, concluded that at least 100 people, mainly BDK members, were killed during the operations launched by the PNC on 28 February 2008 in the province, which lies in the far west of the country.

 


DDR gets under way for 30,000 ex-combatants (10.06.2008)
