Political analysts in this small West African country reckon that both men are likely to garner more votes than any of the other candidates who have so far thrown their hat into the ring, providing they are allowed to participate.

(Quelle: UN News) The United Nations offices in Guinea-Bissau are focusing on efforts to lower tensions between political parties and creating a good political climate for a peaceful, fair and transparent poll, which has been delayed by a month, Secretary-General Kofi Annan says in a report to the Security Council. With 20 political parties having challenged the 2004 voter register, the Guinea-Bissau National Election Commission and the parties will revise the list, delaying the presidential elections until a yet to be determined time in June, a date which will mark the end of the political transition in the post-conflict country, it says.

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the Council noted the fragility of the West African country's progress towards peace and stability, especially after the military mutiny and assassinations of 6 October.

In an exchange of letters with the Security Council, Mr. Annan has announced the appointment of Mozambique's João Bernardo Honwana as his Representative in Guinea-Bissau and head of the UN Peace-building Support Office in that country (UNOGBIS).

Colonel Domingos de Barros of the military high command told reporters that the incident took place on Tuesday near the village of Jumbembe in Oio province, about 100 km northeast of the capital Bissau.

NEC president Higino Cardoso pointed out that 95 percent of the preparations for elections had already been completed before the bloodless coup that deposed former President Kumba Yala on 14 September.
