(Quelle: Der Standard) Dänemark hält trotz Aussagen des sudanesischen Präsidenten Omar al-Bashir und des Vorsitzenden der Afrikanischen Union, Alpha Oumar Konare, an seinem Vorhaben fest, an der von der UNO beschlossenen Friedenstruppe für Darfur (UNAMID) teilzunehmen. Auch Schweden will weiterhin gemeinsam mit Norwegen in Form einer Pioniertruppe zu der insgesamt 26.000 Soldaten und Polizeikräfte umfassenden Sudan-Mission beitragen. Finnland dürfte dagegen eine Absage erteilen.

 


Darfur force 'to be all-African' (13.08.2007)

(Quelle: BBC) Africa will provide all of the 26,000 peacekeepers to be sent to Sudan's Darfur region, the head of the African Union (AU) has said. AU chairman Alpha Oumar Konare said enough African troops had been promised for no outside help to be needed but he did not give details. The UN had expected to call on Asian troops. Critics say Africa lacks enough trained troops for an effective force.

Sudan seen as cool to rebel demands (08.08.2007)

(Quelle: New York Times) Sudan’s government is not enthusiastic about some elements of a joint Darfur rebel negotiating platform agreed to during talks mediated by the United Nations and the African Union, the United Nations envoy Jan Eliasson said Tuesday. Rebel commanders reached agreement this week on land issues, power and wealth-sharing ahead of proposed talks with the government. But Mr. Eliasson told reporters after meeting Foreign Ministry officials in Khartoum that “not all of the points of course are met with great enthusiasm, but it is a basis.”

 


UN envoy begins visit to region for fresh talks (08.08.2007)

(Quelle: UN News) The United Nations envoy tasked with re-energizing the peace process in Darfur heads to the violence-wracked Sudanese region today for talks with local authorities, tribal leaders, civil society groups, Arab nomads and internally displaced persons (IDPs). … Later tomorrow Mr. Eliasson is scheduled to visit El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state and the planned headquarters of UNAMID, the newly established hybrid UN-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur.

 


SLM leader formulates three-step approach for Darfur peace (07.08.2007)

He further welcomed the UN decision on the deployment of the 26000 troops in Darfur, adding that its effective presence on the ground should take place before the political process. In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Abdelwahid al-Nur, clarified why he rejects to engage peace talks with Khartoum before the effective deployment of the hybrid peacekeeping force in Darfur.

(Quelle: UN News) The United Nations is on target to deploy a mainly African hybrid peace force in the war-wracked Sudanese region of Darfur on schedule, but needs more offers from countries on critical capacities such as aviation and ground transport, a senior UN peacekeeping official said today. … Ms. Holl Lute said the UN has already received enough offers from Member States to meet the required numbers of troops and police officers, but “we still are missing some pledges for key enabling capacities in the area of movement, for example, and in the area of aviation.”

 


Darfur’s rebels vow to work together towards peace during UN-chaired talks (06.08.2007)

(Quelle: UN News) Darfurian rebel groups attending United Nations-sponsored “pre-negotiation” talks over the weekend have agreed to work together to try to devise a solution to the deadly conflict that has devastated the Sudanese region since 2003. Four days of talks in Arusha in Tanzania ended today with a pledge from the rebels reaffirming their commitment to the so-called Road-Map outlined by the UN and African Union Special Envoys for re-energizing the political process, Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim.

 


Former UN envoy sees problems for Darfur force (05.08.2007)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Former United Nations envoy for Sudan Jan Pronk is concerned about the effectiveness of a U.N. force for Darfur as the government in Khartoum has obstructed previous U.N. resolutions, Dutch media reported on Saturday. … 'It will take a very long time before that mission is fully operational,' said Pronk in an interview with Dutch daily Trouw. Pronk, who headed the U.N.’s Sudan mission for nearly two years before he was expelled from the country last October for criticising its government, said the Sudanese cabinet had a history of obstructing U.N. missions.

 


Indonesia to send up to 150 civilian police to Darfur (03.08.2007)

Experten zweifeln an UN-Einsatz in Darfur (02.08.2007)

Deutsche Truppen müssen nicht nach Darfur (01.08.2007)

(Quelle: Die Welt) Die Bundesregierung habe deutlich gemacht, dass ein „noch größeres Kontingent“ aus Deutschland bei der geplanten neuen UN-Mission im Sudan angesichts der Einsätze in Afghanistan und auf dem Balkan schwer vorstellbar sei, sagte Vize-Regierungssprecher Thomas Steg in Berlin. Im Rahmen der bisherigen Beschlüsse, die erst im Mai im Bundeskabinett bestätigt worden seien, könnten bis zu 200 Soldaten im Sudan für Logistik-Leistungen eingesetzt werden. Knapp 40 deutsche Militärbeobachter halten sich derzeit zudem unter dem UN-Mandat im Südsudan auf.

 


Widersprüchliche Friedenssignale (01.08.2007)

(Quelle: FAZ) Wie viele Rebellengruppen es in Darfur gibt, kann in der sudanesischen Hauptstadt Khartum niemand sagen - selbst die UN-Mission hat den Überblick verloren. Um die 20 sollen es mindestens sein, und immer noch kommen neue hinzu. Einige tun sich nicht gerade mit Bescheidenheit hervor. Die vergangene Woche aufgetauchte „Gerechtigkeitsfront“ verlangt zum Beispiel von der Regierung 22 Milliarden Dollar - als eine Art Honorar für den Kampfeinsatz im Süden Darfurs an der Seite Khartums.

UN body criticises Sudan abuses (27.07.2007)

(Quelle: BBC) The UN Human Rights Committee has criticised Sudan for what it says are widespread and systematic abuses. The HRC expressed concern over reports of torture, discrimination against women and the use of child soldiers. It also condemned violations in Darfur, including murder, rape, evictions and attacks on civilians. In a separate development, the French foreign minister called for quicker deployment of a joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force to Darfur.

 


Rwanda to send additional troops to Darfur (27.07.2007)

The Rwandan foreign affairs minister, Dr Charles Muligande, said that President Paul Kagame has given his approval to increase the number of troops deployed there. The announcement was made following a meeting between Kagame and Sudan’s foreign minister, Dr Lam Akol.

 


Key Darfur rebel group confirm boycott of Arusha talks (25.07.2007)

Abdelwahid al-Nur, leader of Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), told Sudan Tribune that his group has decided not to participate in the Arusha meeting saying that the international community needs to provide security for civilians in Darfur.

 


UN Darfur resolution watered down (25.07.2007)

The wording of the new text drops the threat of sanctions if Sudan fails to comply with the resolution. New rebel group formed in South Darfur – reports (21.07.2007)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) An armed rebel group, consisting of 4,000 men, has appeared in Al-Duayn locality in Southern Darfur State. The rebel group is formed by militia which fought beside Khartoum against the southern Sudan rebel movements before the peace, local media reported.

 


US stands firm on a chapter VII resolution for Darfur peacekeeping force (20.07.2007)

The UN Security Council (UNSC) is working on a resolution authorizing up to 26,000 troops and police in Darfur. But several council members and Sudan expressed reservations on some parts of the resolution particularly the threat of further measures' if any of the parties 'fail to fulfill their commitments or cooperate fully.'
