Albania, Croatia, Macedonia Sign Defence Pact (16.09.2003)
(Quelle: RFERL) The defence ministers of Albania, Macedonia, and Croatia signed a joint declaration in Tirana on 12 September, Deutsche Welle's 'Monitor' reported. The document helps consolidate the Adriatic Charter that the foreign ministers of the three countries signed in May, together with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Albanisches Parlament kritisiert serbische Kosovo-Resolution (04.09.2003)

Infighting Unsettles Government in Tirana (05.08.2003)
(Quelle: IWPR) Prime Minister Fatos Nano's long-running rivalry with fellow ruling Socialist Party member (Ilir) Meta boiled over just before parliament broke for summer recess at the end of July. The tension came to a head when Meta, who used to hold the foreign minister and deputy premier posts, sent an open letter to the prime minister demanding that the government speed up reforms and stamp out corruption.

(Quelle: Deutsche Welle Monitor) Nach wochenlangem Streit innerhalb der regierenden Sozialistischen Partei in Albanien ist vor zehn Tagen Außenminister Ilir Meta zurückgetreten. Daraufhin hat Ministerpräsident Fatos Nano am Montag (28.7.) dem Parlament seinen Nachfolge-Kandidaten Marko Bello präsentiert, der jedoch nicht nur von der Opposition, sondern auch von sozialistischen Abgeordneten um Meta abgelehnt wurde.
Albania prepares for local elections (21.07.2003)
(Quelle: Southeast European Times) Albania's major political parties have started negotiations with the smaller parties to find possible allies in the long fight to secure as many offices as possible at the local level. In October, the country faces a test:local elections will be held under a changed law mediated by the OSCE. Central Election Commission (CEC) head Ilirian Celibashi recently signed a memorandum with the government concerning plans for the preparation and organisation of the elections.
Albanischer Außenminister zurückgetreten (21.07.2003)
(Quelle: Deutsche Welle Monitor) Nach wochenlangem Streit mit Regierungschef Fatos Nano hat der albanische Außenminister Ilir Meta in der Nacht zum Samstag (19.7.) seinen Rücktritt erklärt. Anlass waren Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen Meta und Ministerpräsident Fatos Nano. Die beiden sozialistischen Politiker sind tief zerstritten, weil Nano Meta im Februar vergangenen Jahres gezwungen hatte, als Ministerpräsident zurückzutreten.
ODIHR Applauds Electoral Reform in Albania (14.07.2003)
(Quelle: osce.org) On his first visit to Albania as Director of the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Ambassador Christian Strohal welcomed the agreement reached by the bi-partisan committee on reforms to the country's election law. At the same time, he urged political parties and the electoral administration to ensure that this leads to substantial improvement in the conduct of the upcoming local government elections, which the ODIHR plans to observe.
Albania Arrests Suspected ANA Commander (03.07.2003)
(Quelle: Southeast European Times) Police on Wednesday (2 July) arrested Gafur Adili, 44, the suspected leader of the Albanian National Army, an organisation that has claimed responsibility for a series of violent acts in Kosovo and Macedonia over the past two years. The US government had placed Adili on a list of those who pose a threat to security in the Balkans. Macedonia praised the arrest as 'an excellent contribution to the stabilisation of the situation in the region'.
