Ashdown: BiH's Serb Democratic Party linked to organised crime, indicted war criminals (01.07.2004)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) High Representative Paddy Ashdown … confirmed Thursday (1 July) that a special audit has established financial abuse and misappropriations by Republika Srpska's (RS) ruling Serb Democratic Party (SDS). Systematic accounting problems suggest that it is quite possible for SDS to have financed war crimes indictees and support networks, Ashdown said.

Er warf ihnen anhaltende Komplizenschaft mit dem ehemaligen Serbenführer Karadzic vor. … Er reagierte damit auf die am Vortag am Nato-Gipfel in Istanbul bekannt gewordene Entscheidung, Bosnien-Herzegowina nicht in das Programm Partnerschaft für den Frieden aufzunehmen. Die Nato hatte ihren negativen Entscheid mit Bosniens mangelnder Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit dem Uno-Kriegsverbrechertribunal begründet und dabei die Schuld eindeutig den zuständigen Behörden in der Republika Srpska angelastet.

 


NATO endorses handover of BiH mission to EU (29.06.2004)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) NATO said Monday (28 June) it would terminate its peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) by the end of 2004, and welcomed the EU's readiness to take over the operation. 'As the security situation in BiH has evolved positively, we have decided to conclude the Alliance's successful SFOR operation by the end of this year,' NATO leaders said in a communique issued at the end of the first session of their two-day summit in Istanbul.

 


Serb leader's Srebrenica regret (23.06.2004)

(Quelle: BBC) Bosnian Serb president Dragan Cavic has called the massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica a black page in the history of the Serb people. In a special TV broadcast he said he understood the pain of the relatives of those who died in the incident. The BBC's Sarajevo correspondent says it is the closest any senior Serb official has come to an apology for the killings, carried out by Serb forces.

EU Braces for Critical Deployment in Bosnia (10.06.2004)

The final decision to pass control over NATO’s Stabilization Force in Bosnia, SFOR, to 7,000 EU troops, following months of preparation, is expected to be taken at the western alliance’s Istanbul summit on June 28-29.

Bosnian Serbs reveal 31 mass graves (07.06.2004)

(Quelle: ISN) Authorities in Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity of Republika Srpska have handed over information on the location of 31 mass graves containing the bodies of an estimated 2’500 Bosniaks massacred in Srebrenica in 1995. Under increasing pressure from the international community, Bosnian Serb authorities have continued to identify previously unknown mass graves since the beginning of this year.

 


NATO to transform military structure (27.05.2004)

(Quelle: Radio Free Europe) The multinational brigades within the NATO-led SFOR peacekeeping mission in Bosnia will be renamed Multi National Task Forces (MNTF), ... . NATO also announced that SFOR will be reduced to 7,000 troops by June, ... . SFOR will also introduce so-called Liaison and Observation Teams, small teams of SFOR soldiers that will reside in normal houses in residential communities and stay in close contact with local authorities, police, and international organizations such as the OSCE.

 


Schweiz plant Beteiligung an Friedenstruppe (27.05.2004)

(Quelle: NZZ) Die Schweiz will sich an der multinationalen Friedenstruppe European Union Force (Eufor) in Bosnien und Herzegowina beteiligen. Der Bundesrat beschloss den Einsatz von maximal 20 Armeeangehörigen für diesen Zweck. Der Einsatz muss vom Parlament genehmigt werden.

 


Canada to help de-mining activities (13.05.2004)

Bosnian Serb Government reveals six new mass graves in Srebrenica (30.04.2004)

Milan Bogdanic, who heads a government-appointed commission to investigate the 1995 massacre, said members of his panel had visited the sites but found it difficult to estimate how many people are buried there. The commission has until June to file a report on Srebrenica.

 


EU Ministers approve plan for assuming BiH Mission (28.04.2004)

The strategic plans were unveiled in Luxembourg on Monday (26 April). The EU force will number 7,000 and will be commanded by Britain. Cvjetko Savic, chief of the Bosnian Serb Army, and Dejan Miletic, the head of the Bosnian Serb office for cooperation with the international war crimes tribunal. … Mr. Ashdown gave the Serb authorities two weeks to produce relevant information or he will consider firing the interior and defense ministers. If a substantial report is not submitted by the first week of June, he said the president and prime minister would be held responsible.

 


Bosnia to Vote in October (16.04.2004)

Voters will elect councils in 142 municipalities, casting their ballots for the first time for the heads of the councils as well as for the members, all of whom serve for four years.

 


SFOR weist Vorwürfe des serbischen Patriarchen zurück (08.04.2004)

(Quelle: DW Monitor) Die Stabilisierungskräfte in Bosnien-Herzegowina (SFOR) haben heute mitgeteilt, die Vorwürfe, der Priester Jeremije Starovlah und sein Sohn Aleksandar seien bei einer SFOR-Aktion am 1. April in Pale zusammengeschlagen worden, seien vollkommen haltlos. In der SFOR-Mitteilung heißt es, es gebe keinen Beweis, der darauf hindeuten würde, dass ihre Verletzungen auf etwas anderes zurückzuführen seien als auf einen Sprengsatz, der beim Betreten des Gebäudes explodiert sei.

 


NATO bleibt präsent (07.04.2004)

(Quelle: taz) Javier Solana, der aussenpolitische Koordinator der EU, hat in Brüssel nach einem informellen Treffen der EU-Verteidigungsminister bekanntgegeben, dass die konzeptionellen Arbeiten … für die Übernahme der Militärmission in Bosnien (Sfor) von der Nato bis Ende Juni abgeschlossen sein sollen. … Die Nato wird allerdings mit 200 bis 300 Militärpersonen in Bosnien präsent bleiben, um die vom Haager Jugoslawien-Tribunal angeklagten mutmasslichen Kriegsverbrecher zu verhaften und die lokalen Streitkräfte bei der Reform im Hinblick auf eine Mitgliedschaft bei der Nato- Partnerschaft für den Frieden zu unterstützen.

Serbs slam Nato Karadzic raid (01.04.2004)

A priest and his son were injured in the operation by about 40 troops from the US, Britain and other nations, who failed to find Mr Karadzic.

Rund 40 Soldaten riegelten am frühen Donnerstag morgen die Kleinstadt Pale bei Sarajevo ab und durchsuchten eine orthodoxe Kirche. Der als Kriegsverbrecher angeklagte Karadzic sei jedoch nicht gefasst worden, teilte SFOR-Sprecher Dave Sullivan mit.

 


EU reportedly determinded to take over Bosnian peacekeeping (16.03.2004)

(Quelle: RFE/RL) The EU wants full control over international peacekeeping in Bosnia once NATO's mission there ends later in 2004, as will probably be announced at the alliance's June Istanbul summit, the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' reported from Brussels on 16 March … . The EU is reportedly willing to allow a NATO Sarajevo office to train the Bosnian military, as is the case in Macedonia. 

 


Bosnian Serb police mount major operation against Karadzic (14.03.2004)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) An estimated 150 Bosnian Serb police officers took part in a search for Radovan Karadzic, the UN tribunal's top war crimes suspect, which started Friday (12 March) night. Police spokesman Dragomir Peric said the operation ended late Saturday without arrests. It was the first such operation by Bosnian Serb police on their own, with SFOR troops monitoring the action.

German Foreign Minister says EU to replace NATO in Bosnia (26.02.2004)

(Quelle: Reliefweb) Speaking in Sarajevo on 26 February, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said that Bosnia's relations with the EU and NATO are dependent on that country's cooperation with the Hague-based war crimes tribunal, Deutsche Welle's Bosnian Service reported … . He added that he expects that a smaller EU contingent will replace the approximately 7,000 NATO-led SFOR peacekeepers by the end of 2004 … . Fischer noted that Germany, which currently has about 1,300 peacekeepers in Bosnia, will take part in the new mission.

 


Irish Officer Assumes Command of EU Police (26.02.2004)
