Police Force to be Reformed with EU Assistance (16.09.2003)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) The government has drawn up a plan for EU experts to be sent to the interior ministry and a number of police stations in the north of the country. Their job would be to enhance the efficiency of the Macedonian police in dealing with militants and organised crime groups and to show them how to improve their image with the local ethnic Albanian population.

Party Leader Calls for Division along Ethnic Lines (16.09.2003)

(Quelle: RFERL) Arben Xhaferi, who chairs the opposition Democratic Party of the Albanians (PDSH), told RFE/RL's Macedonian broadcasters on 14 September that he supports of the idea of ethnic self-determination and dividing Macedonia along ethnic lines because he believes that other options for multiethnic coexistence have failed.

 


Koalitionskrise in Mazedonien (09.09.2003)

(Quelle: Deutsche Welle Monitor) Gestern Abend haben sich die Koalitionspartner – Premier Branko Crvenkovski, Sozialdemokratisches Bündnis für Mazedonien (SDSM) und der Vorsitzende der Demokratischen Union für Integration, DUI, Ali Ahmeti – getroffen. Sie erörterten dabei die Polizeiaktion im Dorf Brest gegen eine kriminelle Vereinigung. … Nach Angaben der albanischen Seite ist diese Aktion ohne ihre Kenntnis durchgeführt worden. Ferner seien dabei auch unter Zivilisten Opfer zu beklagen und das Dorf sei beschädigt worden.

 


Trajkovski: No Extension for Concordia (09.09.2003)

He insisted Macedonian security forces are able to address recent tensions in the northwest, and that no additional help is needed.

 


Albanian Rebels Clash with Government Troops (08.09.2003)

(Quelle: The Guardian) Macedonia faced its most serious security crisis for more than a year yesterday, when ethnic Albanians clashed with security forces on the border with Kosovo in fighting that left several gunmen dead. Macedonian police said a routine border patrol came under fire yesterday morning from suspected Albanian militants.

 


Macedonian Forces End Siege of Two Villages (04.09.2003)

(Quelle: South East European Times) Authorities announced on Wednesday (3 September) that they are lifting the siege of two villages north of the capital. Vaksince and Lojane were sealed off while the army and police combed the area looking for a group of Albanian National Army fighters and their commander, Avdil Jakupi. Many residents who had left the village earlier in the week are now returning to their homes.

 


Ethnic Tensions Grow (01.09.2003)

(Quelle: The Guardian) Thousands of ethnic Albanians were reportedly fleeing a northern Macedonian town because of fears of bloodshed, and top officials blamed extremists and criminals for the rise in ethnic tensions. More than 2,000 residents on Sunday left Vaksinci, 12 miles northeast of the capital, Skopje, state television said.

 


Albanian Militia Attacks Border Post (26.08.2003)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) The rebel group Albanian National Army (ANA) claimed responsibility Tuesday (26 August) for the recent attack on the Gosince checkpoint at Macedonia's border with Kosovo. ANA said the move was part of its operation against the Macedonian Army, aimed at making troops withdraw from regions populated by ethnic Albanians. The government described the attack as an attempt to destabilise the area.

 


War Crimes Tribunal to Present Indictments (20.08.2003)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) The UN war crimes tribunal is expected to present indictments stemming from the 2001 military conflict in Macedonia in a couple of months, deputy public prosecutor Roksanda Krstevska told the daily Utrinski Vesnik on Wednesday (20 August). Krstevska said that tribunal representatives had sought permission to contact certain individuals, currently serving prison sentences, in regard to the indictments.

 


UNDP Reports on Illegal Weapons (08.08.2003)

(Quelle: Southeast European Times) More than 100,000 people possess illegal weapons in Macedonia, the UNDP announced Wednesday (6 August). A UNDP survey found that at least 40 per cent of Macedonians think that there are too many weapons in the country. The official media campaign on popularisation of the collection process had been due to kick off on 6 August, but the UNDP said the start will be delayed until September.

 


Freiwillige Waffenabgabe in Mazedonien soll verschoben werden (23.07.2003)

(Quelle: Deutsche Welle Monitor) Die internationale Gemeinschaft hat vorgeschlagen, die Aktion über die freiwillige Waffenabgabe in Mazedonien besser zu organisieren und sie auf das kommende Frühjahr zu verschieben. 'Es ist besser die Aktion abzusagen, als sie schlecht vorbereitet zu beginnen', so Diplomaten gegenüber der Regierung in Skopje.

 


EU Extends Concordia’s Mandate (16.07.2003)

(Quelle: RFERL) In Brussels on 16 July, the EU agreed to extend its 400-strong Concordia military mission to Macedonia by 2 1/2 months until 15 December. … French representatives said, however, that France does not want to continue leading the operation. … Several Macedonian leaders have made it clear that they do not see any need for a foreign military presence beyond that date.

 


Opposition Parties Play Ethnic Card (16.07.2003)

(Quelle: ISN) Macedonia' s Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) played up ethnic divisions at its weekend congress, saying that if the Ohrid agreement between ethnic Albanian rebels and the Macedonian state was not honored, then the DPA would 'enact the idea of self-determination.' Both Slav Macedonian and ethnic Albanian opposition leaders have stepped up pro-partition rhetoric in recent months. Recent tension is fueled by ethnic Albanian frustration with the government's failure to implement reforms tied to the 2001 Ohrid peace agreement, which aimed to put the rights of ethnic Albanians on a par with those of Macedonians.
