Prosecutors say the charges establish an important link between the former Yugoslav army and separatist militias. Former Gen Momcilo Perisic, 60, handed himself in to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Monday.

(Quelle: BBC) Serbia has rejected a proposal from Montenegro that the two end their union and form independent nations. Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said the plan was a serious breach of an agreement signed in Belgrade in 2003 under EU auspices.

If accepted by Belgrade, the deal would abolish what little has remained of the Serbia-Montenegro union, established in 2003 under European Union auspices as a successor state to the already truncated version of the former Yugoslavia.

Serbian prosecutors refused to identify the suspects but confirmed that another three are still being sought. The arrests are understood to be part of a test case started by international prosecutors in The Hague and passed on to the Serbian judiciary last October. It's the first time such a transfer has taken place and a key test for Serbia.

His decision to turn himself in after talks with the Serbian prime minister last week is being seen as a sign that the Belgrade government, albeit reluctantly, is beginning to cooperate in trying to get indicted war crimes suspects to stand trial at The Hague.

That amount comes on top of the more than $16m that was held last year for the same reason.

Under the plan, the VSCG intends to combine the Nis and Pristina corps to form a “Joint Command of Land Forces” in the area by mid-2005. What has caused most controversy is the plan to house the joint force in a large new compound covering 52 hectares between the mostly Albanian towns of Bujanovac and Presevo.

In a statement released Sunday (28 November), he charged that certain institutions and ministries are 'verbally endorsing the union, but in reality taking steps to directly slow down the joint state's accession to the EU, undermining its stability and possibly quickening its demise'.

Carla Del Ponte said the Serbian government had deliberately chosen to ignore its legal obligations. … The UN Security Council has set the international tribunal a target of 2008 to finish the trials.

(Quelle: DW Monitor) Vertreter der Albaner im Presheva-Tal (Presevo-Tal) haben jeden Gedanken an eine territoriale Aufteilung Kosovas kategorisch abgelehnt. Zudem fordern sie den gleichen Status wie die serbischen Bürger Kosovas. Die Vertreter des Presheva-Tals sind gegen jede Grenzveränderung auf dem Balkan. Sollten jedoch die Kosova-Serben und Belgrad weiterhin darauf beharren, dann würden sie eine Integration mit Kosova verlangen, zu dem es (das Tal) vor Jahrzehnten gehört habe.

According to Belgrade-based Radio B92, the council also agreed to step up its activities before the UN Security Council meeting on 23 November, when chief UN prosecutor Carla del Ponte is due to submit a report on Serbia-Montenegro's co-operation with the tribunal.

Tadic sagte als Gast einer Fernsehsendung des TV-Senders B92, dass er für die Auslieferung der vier Generäle sei. Dies sei auch im Einklang mit dem Gesetz und deshalb gebe es keine Hindernisse für deren Verhaftung.

Amid a low turnout of just under 23 percent, incomplete official or unofficial returns suggest that the Democrats have won in Belgrade and 23 other municipalities, while the Radicals are ahead in Novi Sad and 18 other localities.

The UN tribunal in The Hague is demanding, in particular, the transfer of Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic for crimes during Bosnia's civil war. President Boris Tadic promised to supply 'clear answers' within days.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior Serbian security officer told AP on Tuesday (28 September) that a massive search operation for former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic was ongoing.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs raised the issue with foreign ministers of EU members states during a Monday meeting in Brussels, where he called on Serbian authorities to take immediate steps to halt the violence against the ethnic Hungarian minority in Vojvodina.
