Fischer will 100 deutsche Beobachter schicken (07.12.2004)

(Quelle: Der Spiegel) Die Neuauflage der vom Obersten Gericht wegen Fälschungen für ungültig erklärten Präsidentenwahl müsse transparent und frei sein sowie unter internationaler Beobachtung stattfinden, sagte Außenminister Fischer. 'Die OSZE-Wahlbeobachter spielen dabei eine herausragende Rolle. Deutschland ist bereit, bis zu 100 Wahlbeobachter zu entsenden', sagte Joschka Fischer in Sofia bei einem Ministertreffen der Organisation für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa.

Putin of Russia, while saying for the first time that he would accept the results of a new Ukrainian runoff election, ruminated about the possibility that Europe might be divided once again 'into people for the West and people for the East.' Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was much more direct, saying 'we must not allow election monitoring' in Ukraine 'to be turned into a political instrument.'

 


Ukraine Appears Set for New Poll (02.12.2004)

Rival candidates Viktor Yanukovych and Viktor Yushchenko have agreed to seek a solution once the Supreme Court rules on electoral fraud allegations. The court should reach a decision on Thursday or Friday.

 


Ukraine Parliament Votes to Sack Government (01.12.2004)

Sie protestieren gegen das am Vortag offiziell bekanntgegebene Ergebnis der Präsidentenwahl. Die Wahlkommission hatte den Favoriten der Regierung, Ministerpräsident Viktor Janukowitsch, offiziell zum Sieger erklärt. Er habe 49,5 Prozent der Stimmen erhalten. Sein Kontrahent Viktor Juschtschenko liege bei 46,35 Prozent. Juschtschenko weigert sich indes weiter, dieses Ergebnis anzuerkennen. Er rief stattdessen zu einem landesweiten Generalstreik auf.

Opposition leader declared winner of first round presidential voting (10.11.2004)

The two men will face each other in a runoff on 21 November.

The count, which reflected deep regional, ethnic and social divisions among Ukraine's 47 million people, forces a runoff on Nov. 21.

European Parliament concerned over media freedom (12.03.2004)

The resolution also calls on Ukraine to ensure transparent and democratic presidential elections in October.
