(Quelle: Washington Post) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has sent messages to Syrian President Bashar Assad that he is interested in reopening peace talks and suggested Israel would return territory it captured 40 years ago, Israeli officials said Tuesday. Israel hopes a resumption of talks with Syria would moderate the bitter foe and win Damascus over in the regional effort to counter Iran's fundamentalist influence, a Foreign Ministry official said.

 


Syria complains to UN over Israel (12.09.2007)

(Quelle: BBC) Syria has formally complained to the United Nations about an alleged raid by Israeli aircraft over its territory. The Syrian ambassador, Bashar Jaafari, said Israeli fighter planes had dropped munitions after crossing Syria's frontier last Thursday. Mr Jaafari described the incident as a flagrant violation of Syrian airspace. Israel has repeatedly refused to comment but US officials said Israeli fighters had carried out an attack on an unspecified target.

Die Streitkräfte seien zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass ein Krieg mit Syrien unwahrscheinlich sei, verlautete am Mittwoch aus israelischen Sicherheitskreisen in Jerusalem. Die syrischen Streitkräfte hätten ihre Kriegsbereitschaft verringert. Einzelheiten wurden nicht genannt. Um die Spannungen zu verringern, würden geplante israelische Manöver auf den Golan-Höhen in den Süden verlegt. Der Zustand der Kriegsbereitschaft an der Grenze gelte als beendet.

 


Security Council extends UN observer force in Golan Heights (20.06.2007)

(Quelle: UN News) The Security Council today extended for a further six months the mandate of the UN force monitoring the long-standing ceasefire between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights. In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-member Council decided to renew the mandate of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) until 31 December 2007, as recommended by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his latest report on the Force’s activities.

'Syria is favorable toward relaunching the peace process in the presence of Russian and American mediators,' Information Minister Mohsen Bilal told reporters. Peace talks between Israel and Syria collapsed in 2000, mainly because of deadlock over the return of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 war and unilaterally annexed in 1981.

 


Two new Force Commanders to head UN missions in Golan Heights and Lebanon (18.01.2007)

In letters to the President of the Security Council, Mr. Ban announced his intention to appoint Major-General Wolfgang Jilke of Austria to lead the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and Major-General Claudio Graziano of Italy to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem also said that the 'war on terror' has failed and that US policies were behind the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Moallem spoke hours after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced in a newspaper interview that the US hoped to persuade its allies to back new sanctions against Syria over its purported role in destabilizing Lebanon and Iraq and supporting Hamas.

Major-General Franciszek Gagor of Poland, at present commander of the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM), which is being phased out, will take over from Major-General Bo Wranker on 13 August.
