(Quelle: UN News) A veteran of numerous international court proceedings has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the Registrar of the tribunal being set up to try those responsible for political killings in Lebanon, particularly the 2005 attack that killed former prime minister Rafiq Hariri. Robin Vincent of the United Kingdom will start his duties on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon at a date yet to be determined, … .

 


Lebanon presidential vote postponed for 16th time (10.03.2008)

(Quelle: Middle East Times) A parliamentary session to elect Lebanon's president has been postponed from Tuesday to March 25 amid continued deadlock between rival political leaders, the speaker's office announced on Monday. 'Parliament speaker Nabih Berri has decided to postpone the session to Tuesday, March 25 at noon (1000 GMT),' his spokesman Ali Hamdan told AFP.

 


Ban informs Siniora preparations under way for Hariri tribunal (10.03.2008)

(Quelle: The Daily Star (Lebanon)) UN chief Ban Ki-Moon informed Prime Minister Fouad Siniora during a phone conversation Saturday that preparations for the international tribunal to try suspects in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri were under way. Ban also told Siniora that during the last few days, a UN administrative committee has inspected a potential site for the tribunal in the Netherlands.

 


French UNIFIL troops conduct training exercises near border with Israel (05.03.2008)

(Quelle: The Daily Star (Beirut)) A unit of the French contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has begun a round of training exercises in the Southern areas extending from Aarqoub to the Shebaa Farms, the National News Agency (NNA) reported on Monday. In a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry on Monday, France said it was willing to support UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by sending additional French forces to Lebanon to control the border and prevent arms smuggling.

(Quelle: BBC) A parliamentary vote to elect Lebanon's president has been delayed for a 14th time. The speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, said the vote was now scheduled for 26 February. Lebanon has been without a president since 23 November due to divisions between the pro-Western ruling majority and pro-Syrian opposition. Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has left Beirut after failing to mediate a solution to the crisis.

According to the daily, relations between UNIFIL commander Major General Claudio Graziano and Hizbullah 'deteriorated in recent weeks as the security forces cracked down on movements over the Litani's bridges.'
