China backs Uzbekistan, splitting with U.S. on crackdown (25.05.2005)

(Quelle: New York Times) The government of China offered unequivocal support on Tuesday for President Islam A. Karimov of Uzbekistan, who is facing international criticism for the crackdown against a prison break and antigovernment rally in the northeastern city of Andijon earlier this month. The support came amid fresh signs that the scale of violence exceeded what the Uzbek authorities have described, and as residents of Andijon and rights groups warned that roundups had begun inside Uzbekistan in an effort to squelch dissent.

Karimow verweigert UN-Untersuchung der Unruhen in Andischan (21.05.2005)

(Quelle: Die Welt) Karimow habe in einem Gespräch mit UN-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan erklärt, der Besuch von Diplomaten und Journalisten am Mittwoch in Andischan sei ausreichend, zitierte die russische Nachrichtenagentur Interfax die UN-Hochkommissarin für Menschenrechte, Luise Arbour, am Freitag. Der Kurzbesuch war vom usbekischen Sicherheitsdienst streng überwacht worden, eigene Nachforschungen waren nicht möglich.

 


Uzbek troops retake rebel town (19.05.2005)

The uprising in Korasuv followed a bloody crackdown in nearby Andijan.

 


Under Pressure, Uzbek President Raises Death Toll from Clashes (18.05.2005)

In einer gestern in Berlin veröffentlichten Erklärung forderte Außenminister Joschka Fischer, den Berichten über eine hohe Zahl von Toten in der Stadt Andischan müsse 'entschlossen nachgegangen' werden.

Uzbek 'no-choice' poll condemned (27.12.2004)

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe said the vote was neither competitive nor transparent. It said the five parties taking part were so similar that voters were deprived of significant choice. All of them supported President Islam Karimov, the powerful leader who has run Uzbekistan for almost 20 years.

OSCE Envoy Visits Uzbekistan (02.11.2004)

(Quelle: RFE/RL) Martti Ahtisaari, the OSCE chairman in office's personal envoy to Central Asia, met with Uzbek President Islam Karimov and other high-ranking officials in Tashkent on 1 November, Uzbek TV reported. Upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan, scheduled for 26 December, were the focus of the talks. At a meeting with Central Election Commission head Buritosh Mustafoev, Ahtisaari noted that the OSCE is concerned that no opposition parties have been registered to take part in elections.

 


OSCE to Observe Uzbek Elections (27.10.2004)

Nach Anschlägen: 30 Verdächtige gefasst (01.04.2004)

(Quelle: taz) Nach den Anschlägen in Usbekistan haben die Behörden 30 Terrorverdächtige festgenommen. Die Suche nach den Tätern werde fortgesetzt, so ein Polizeisprecher in Taschkent. Bei den Anschlägen kamen in drei Tagen 42 Menschen ums Leben. Die Behörden machten islamische Extremisten für die Anschläge verantwortlich.

 


Terrorwelle in Usbekistan (31.03.2004)

(Quelle: FAZ.Net) In der usbekischen Hauptstadt Taschkent waren am Mittwoch alle Märkte und Kindergärten geschlossen, Zufahrten in die Stadt und Straßen wurden von der Polizei streng kontrolliert, der Busverkehr mit anderen Städten war eingestellt. Auch die Grenze zu Kasachstan und Kirgistan wurde dichtgemacht, die usbekischen Botschaften sollen angewiesen worden sein, keine Visa mehr auszugeben. In den vergangenen Tagen hat das zentralasiatische Land die bisher schlimmste Terrorwelle erlebt.

 


OSCE Centre to Train Uzbek Journalists on Reporting on Human Trafficking (17.02.2004)

Reports Suggest IMU Still a Threat to Central Asia (27.01.2004)
