Every year on May 29, the UN commemorates and honors its uniformed and civilian peacekeeping personnel. Around 100.000 staff is working in peacekeeping operations worldwide, committed to peace and stability. But their work is hard and challenging. 129 peacekeepers have lost their lives serving under the UN flag in 2017. The number of deaths amongst peacekeepers has risen in the last years - witnessing new dangerous missions as MINUSMA in Mali.

This year's theme is "70 Years of Service and Sacrifice". Many operations and missions celebrate this day, the UN headquarters informs about their work  and UN Secretary General calls fo sustaining peace efforts.

In 2013, we started to celebrate the Peacekeepers Day in Germany to honor German personnel in peace operations. Eversince, the Federal Foreign Office together with the Ministries of Interior and Defence and the support of ZIF invite to celebrate the work of uniformed and civilian peacekeeping personnel.

This year's Peacekeepers Day is organized by the Federal Ministry of Interior and will be held on June 26. Selected civilian experts, police and military will be awarded for their commitment to peace - representative of over 3.000 Germans working for UN, EU, OSCE or NATO missions worldwide.
