Lunch Briefing about the Future of the United Nations

On February 22 Michael von der Schulenburg presented his recent book „On Building Peace: Rescuing the Nation-State and Saving the United Nations“ at ZIF. It is based on the author’s vast experience in field missions of the OSCE and, in particular, the UN in Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Sierra Leone, where he served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL). A lively discussion followed in which Michael von der Schulenburg argued for a fundamental overhaul of the UN Charter in order to enable the organization to face the triple threat of failing states, intra-state conflicts and the rise of armed non-state actors.
