Peer Coaching "Mediation and Diplomacy" in Brussels

12.09.2017

After having successfully implemented three high-level events for diplomats of the Federal Foreign Office, the ZIF peer coaching format “Mediation and Diplomacy” was now transferred to a European context.

In cooperation with the unit „Prevention of Conflict, Rule of Law/SSR, Integrated Approach, Stabilisation and Mediation“ (PRISM) within the EEAS, ZIF held its first peer coaching „Mediation and Diplomacy: from Global Strategy to Implementation“ for heads of EU Delegations and EU Special Representatives in Brussels.

For two days, participants shared experiences and challenges, findings and successes of international peace mediation and worked on specific case studies of international conflict mediation with EU participation.

Participants were guided by well-recognized coaches like Dr. Antje Herrberg of mediatEUr, Bill Marsh, Dr. Simon Mason of ETH Zürich and Pierre-Yves Monette of the United Nations Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors who shared their experiences from mediation processes from all over the world – from Mali to Libya, from Columbia to Myanmar, from Yemen to Sudan.

In addition, the UN Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Nicholas „Fink“ Haysom, shared his insights and experiences from various mediation efforts on the African continent and in Afghanistan. And Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake shared her experiences as Head of the EU Election Observation Mission to Kenya.

Interactive and participative methods for conflict analysis and mediation process design as well as a critical review of previous EU engagement in the field of peace mediation provided for an intellectually stimulating exchange of views and experiences.
