In his new comment on EUNAVFOR Med at EUobserver, Tobias Pietz argues that the mission should be closed and replaced. Due to the controversy on disembarkation of refugees, it seems that the ships of the mission have been sent away from smuggling routes on purpose in order to avoid rescuing people that could not be transferred to the closest ports any longer. CSDP missions and see rescue should not be part of political gambling but that is exactly what has happened to Operation Sophia since summer 2018. Sophia's tasks should be taken up by Frontex and a new "Mare Nostrum", a coalition of member states willing to save lives in the Mediterranean.
