The head of the joint United Nations-African Union mission in the western Sudanese region of Darfur (UNAMID) reports a decrease in clashes and ethnic conflict, as well as a decline in criminal activities against civilians, including banditry, and fewer attacks on humanitarian convoys in the area. In the first quarter of 2012, the strength of patrols in the region has been increased. They also cover larger geographic areas than before.

The United Nations and the African Union are reducing the size of their hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur, known as UNAMID. Conditions in the western Sudanese region are said to be improving, even as tensions flare along the Sudan/South Sudan border. … It was not immediately clear how large the cutback will be. Officials say that decision will be made by the UN Security Council over the next few weeks.
