'The nine military personnel on board, eight French and one Canadian, all died in this tragic accident,' France's Ministry of Defence said in a statement, confirming earlier reports from Egyptian officials. The crew were on a training mission, an MFO spokesman said.

 


EU extends Gaza border mission for 6 months (14.11.2006)

Some 70 European monitors have been overseeing the Rafah crossing under a 12-month agreement, which took effect at the end of November 2005 and was aimed at opening up Gaza after Israel withdrew following 38 years of occupation. EU foreign ministers approved the six-month extension of the monitoring mission to May 24, 2007 at a regular meeting in Brussels on Monday.

Israeli ministers on Tuesday agreed to a compromise negotiated with Egypt prior to the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza that would see the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Egypt operate the Rafah Crossing with EU inspectors monitoring civilian traffic arriving from Egypt. It would be the first time that the EU has become actively involved on the ground in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, though it is far from certain that the Union will approve the long-term dispatch of monitors to the region, which it has yet to discuss.

Sinai blast hurts 2 peacekeepers (16.08.2005)

As the peacekeepers drove by, a gas canister planted on the side of the road was detonated by an electric wire, the governor of North Sinai, Ahmed Abdel Hamid, told Egyptian state television. A second wired gas canister that failed to blow up was found at the site, Mr. Hamid said.
