Fact-finding visit to Sudan

The director of ZIF, Almut Wieland-Karimi led a small delegation visiting Sudan from February 18 – 22, 2011 where they held talks on the successful referendum for independence in South Sudan, the current situation in the north, and possibilities for new peace operation mandates.

Besides discussions with Mr. Haile Menkerios, the head of the current UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), further meetings with several ministers as well as civil society representatives took place in Khartoum and Juba – the future capital of South Sudan.

The delegation comprised the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Civilian Crisis Prevention and Integrated Conflict Management of the German Bundestag, Mr. Joachim Spatz, his deputy, Ms. Kerstin Mueller, and the deputy director-general responsible for civilian crisis prevention of the Federal Foreign Office, Mr. Georg Birgelen.
