Democratization/Governance

Democratization programs have become an integral part of peace operations in the aftermath of state failure, state formation, or violent transformation processes. While democratization in peace operations initially focused on the preparation, implementation or supervision of free and fair elections, tasks have diversified significantly over the past years. Currently, democratization and governance encompass all activity that aim at building and consolidating democratic institutions and structures on the political as well as the societal level.

Working areas such as elections, media development, rule of law, civil administration, and human rights are central components of democratization. In addition, it includes the promotion of transparent and accountable governance (“good governance”), the establishment of an effective public administration, the promotion of multi-party systems and pluralist parliamentary structures as well as the strengthening of civil society.
