Media Development

The (re)construction of an independent and pluralistic media (radio, television, and print media) is a central component of democratization. Post-conflict situations are frequently characterized by repressive media laws, abuse of media by conflict parties, censorship and discrimination of opposition media as well as domination of government media. Furthermore, the development of a free media is often hampered by a lack of trained journalists as well as insufficient technical facilities.

It is, therefore, an important task to meet the institutional, technical, and legal requirements of a democratic and independent media. This includes setting-up radio and television broadcasting stations, the development of print media as well as giving advice on media related legal reforms. In addition, training and education programs are required to assist in strengthening personnel capacities.

Media development is closely related to activities in the area of democratization.
