Rule of Law

Programs in this area strengthen the rule of law within the legal and the political system as well as civilian administration based on principles such as the separation of powers, the independence of the judiciary, and the respect for human rights.  Therefore, the three key pillars for of rule of law programs are the judiciary, the administration of justice, the civilian police force, and the penal system.

Work in this area is closely related to democratization, human rights, and civil administration.

  • Promoting the rule of law within the public administration
  • Raising public awareness on rule of law issues
  • Supporting the recruitment and training of a civilian police force
  • Promoting the establishment of independent judiciaries
  • Providing advice on the adaptation of laws to international standards
  • Supporting the establishment of independent legal institutions (e.g. ombudsperson)
  • Monitoring court proceedings
  • Providing training and capacity building for judges and lawyers
  • Providing training for prison officers
  • Introducing alternative dispute resolution strategies
  • Developing and supporting anti-corruption programs
  • Providing technical support for courts
