Cooperation with other Training Institutions

National Cooperation

Bundeswehr and Police

Since its founding in 2002, ZIF has steadily developed its training cooperation with the Bundeswehr (the German armed forces). For both the Core Course Peace Operations and the Field Security Training, the UN Training Center of the Bundeswehr in Hammelburg conducts the security modules. Both ZIF and the Bundeswehr training institutions regularly exchange resource persons and training material. In addition, ZIF expert pool members participate in UN-certified UN Staff Officer Courses (UNSOC) as well as other complex peacekeeping training exercises at the Staff College of Bundeswehr in Hamburg.

ZIF closely cooperates with several training institutions of the national as well as state police forces, particularly with regard to joint pre-mission trainings of police and civilians for EU deployment (i.e. Kosovo and Georgia). Staff members of the Institute for Police Training and Policing Excellence North-Rhine Westphalia with personal mission experience serve regularly as trainers in ZIF training courses, covering the vital subjects of personal safety and security in field assignments.

International Cooperation

Training Initiative of the European Commission

Since its inception under the European Commission financed pilot project on “Training for Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management”, the European Group on Training (EGT) has seeked to advance the civilian component of the European Union’s crisis management capabilities.

ZIF is one of the founding members of the EGT and has been supporting the initiative since 2002. As an open network, the EGT continues to operate on an informal basis.

Integrated DDR Training Group (IDDRTG)

In response to the growing demand of qualified field staff for Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programs for ex-combatants in peace operations, ten international training institutions created the IDDRTG in 2006. The consortium seeks to develop curricula, produce training material and conduct courses based on the Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS) of the United Nations. Its founding members, apart from ZIF, are:

African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD)

Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC)

Center for European Security Studies (CESS)

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)

Norwegian Defence International Centre (NODEFIC)

Peaceworkers UK

Pearson Peacekeeping Center

Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna

Swedish National Defense College
