Rebels withdraw quietly to southeastern Chad (12.02.2008)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Chadian rebels who tried last week to overthrow president Idriss Deby withdrew quietly to the southeastern border of the country, French general said today. 'They left Mongo (in central Chad) after several days’ occupation and two or three hundred pick-up trucks are headed in single file over several kilometres towards the three-way frontier,' Colonel Paul Perie said.

 


EU force resumes Chad deployment (12.02.2008)

The EUFOR mission said a military transport plane had arrived in the town of Abeche in eastern Chad, and more would follow in the coming days. Their deployment was delayed when rebels attacked the Chad capital.

 


Chad 'cannot take more refugees' (11.02.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) Chad's Prime Minister, Nouradine Delwa Kassire Koumakoye, has said his country cannot absorb any more refugees from the Sudanese region of Darfur. The UN says 12,000 people fled into Chad over the weekend after attacks on villages in Darfur by Sudanese forces pursuing rebel fighters. 'We are simply demanding that they be moved, otherwise we will do it,' Mr Koumakoye said. He accuses Sudan of being behind last week's failed coup attempt by rebels.

 


Chad imposes curfew as rebels regroup (08.02.2008)

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Chad’s government on Thursday slapped a night curfew on Ndjamena and southern provinces as rebels who almost ousted President Idriss Deby Itno regrouped and rearmed after battling for the capital. Deby claims he controls the whole country, but a military source said the rebel alliance driven out of Ndjamena after a heavy weekend of fighting met up with reinforcements about 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the city.

 


Chad president 'in total control' (06.02.2008)

'We are in total control, not only of the capital, but of all the country,' Idriss Deby told reporters from the presidential palace in the capital.

(Quelle: Le Monde) Après avoir revendiqué un soutien militaire 'a minima' au président tchadien Idriss Déby, la France a haussé le ton, mardi 5 février, à la suite du feu vert donné par l'ONU à une éventuelle intervention directe. 'Si la France doit faire son devoir [au Tchad], elle le fera, a déclaré Nicolas Sarkozy à Aytré (Charente-Maritime). Maintenant qu'il y a la décision du Conseil de sécurité, il faut laisser le Tchad tranquille.'  Soucieux de signifier la rupture avec l'époque des interventions unilatérales, le président français a ajouté : 'On n'est plus dans ce qu'on appelle la Françafrique , il y a des règles internationales, je veux m'y conformer.'

(Quelle: Sudan Tribune) Chad’s forces loyal to President Idriss Deby controlled the capital and its immediate surroundings, while French military aircraft have been patrolling the Chad-Sudan border to ensure there has been no interference in the fighting around N’Djamena. 'Today, the city of Ndjamena is under (government) control, at least within a 10-kilometre (six-mile) radius,' French ambassador Bruno Foucher told reporters in Ndjamena.

 


Chad: new danger zones for UN workers (05.02.2008)

As a result of the growing violence in both countries, the Secretariat is once again reviewing the safety of its workers -- nearly eight weeks after a bombing in Algeria claimed the lives of 17 staff members in mid-December.

'We are going to have a dramatic and catastrophic situation in the whole sub-region,' Allam-mi told IRIN in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where he was attending an African Union meeting.

 


Rebels pull back from Chad's capital after attack (04.02.2008)

Leaders of the group that attacked N'Djamena in gun-mounted pickup trucks said they had pulled back to give civilians a chance to leave, and claimed to still control two key bridges heading into town, the Associated Press reported Monday.

 


EU still plans to send peacekeepers to Chad, despite unrest (04.02.2008)

'Today the situation is still not clear, but we continue to maintain the operation,' Solana told reporters in Brussels. 'Of course we are not going to continue the deployment as it started, we stopped it for the last few days in order to see how the situation evolves on the ground, but our wish is to maintain the operation,' he added.

Chadian army arrests leaders of civilian opposition (04.02.2008)

Following the withdrawal of the rebels from the capital on Sunday evening, soldiers from the Chadian National Army (Armée Nationale Tchadienne) supporting Idriss Deby arrested a number of leaders of the civilian opposition.

 


Afrikanische Union droht Rebellen (03.02.2008)

Falls der Aufstand erfolgreich sei, dürfe der Tschad nicht mehr Mitglied der 53 Länder umfassenden Organisation sein, sagte der AU-Vorsitzende Jakaya Kiwete bei einem Gipfeltreffen in Äthiopien. The rebels have taken control of the outlying neighborhoods of the capital and a good part of the city centre after intense fighting with government forces, according to military sources. … The United Nations also planned to evacuate its personnel in Chad to Cameroon, a spokesman said.

EU launches Chad protection force (28.01.2008)

(Quelle: BBC) A European peacekeeping force is to head to Chad and the Central African Republic, after it was approved by EU foreign ministers in Brussels. The 3,500-strong contingent will aim to protect refugees from Darfur and people displaced by internal fighting. France has promised to deploy at least 1,350 troops and the Irish Defence Forces are to send a further 450. The mission which has been delayed several times is due to begin in the coming weeks under a UN mandate.

The contingent will have the task of protecting refugees from Darfur and people displaced by internal fighting. EU ministers will still have to rubber-stamp the 3,500-strong force in time for a launch in early February. Diplomats said that a shortfall of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft had been solved by further contributions from France, Belgium and Poland.

France, Belgium, Poland fill Chad, CAR force gaps (11.01.2008)

'We have all the means we need' for the force, which will protect hundreds of thousands of refugees from strife-torn Darfur, he said, after a meeting of EU military experts in Brussels. 'The conclusion is that the EUFOR Chad-CAR operation now has all that is needed to proceed to the next stage, which is for its commander, Irish General Pat Nash, to draw up an operational plan,' he said.

Chad 'launches Darfur air raids' (07.01.2008)

The raids took place on Sunday near the West Darfur capital, Geneina - the second such strikes reported in a week. The air strikes were reported a day after Chad's President Idris Deby said that he would send troops to destroy rebel Chadian bases in Darfur.

 


UN mission launches police training programme (04.01.2008)
