LRA kills ten in Central African Republic (02.08.2009)

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has launched attacks against towns in the Central African Republic that have left at least ten people dead in the last two weeks. The attacks, launched from LRA's rear bases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have also forced hundreds of people to flee their villages, UN and aid group officials said. In the worst incident, LRA rebels stormed the market of the city of Mboki on July 24.

Jean Pierre Vidon, a déclaré, lundi 13 juillet 2009 à Bangui, que « la France soutiendra le processus électoral à venir" dans le pays. ... Abordant la question d'un éventuel départ des militaires français de la République Centrafricaine, il a rappelé les propos du Président Nicolas Sarkozy devant le parlement sud-africain, le 28 février 2008, au Cap affirmant que « la double volonté de la France est de rester engagée en faveur de l’Afrique, d’une part, et d’autre part, de moderniser sa relation avec elle».

 


UNICEF welcomes release of child soldiers and urges further demobilizations (07.07.2009)

UNICEF today confirmed the demobilization of 182 children who have been released by the rebel group APRD since April 2009 in Central African Republic’s northern Ouham Pendé province. Many of the 166 boys and 16 girls, aged 10–17, served in the People’s Army for the Restoration of Democracy, APRD, since its formation in 2006.

Abdoulaye Miskine, leader of the Democratic Front for the central Africab people (FDPC), a rebel movement based in the northern Central African Republic (CAR), has signed an agreement to end hostilities with the government in Bangui. The local press said that the Libreville peace accord that Bangui had signed with other rebel groups in 2008 was ratified by Miskine in the background of the 13th African Union (AU) summit in Sirte, Libya, last week.

A new UN special envoy and head of the UN Support Bureau for Peace in the Central African Republic (BONUCA), Sahle-Work Zewde from Ethiopia, has arrived in Bangui, AFP reported from Bangui citing a UN source on Wednesday. … Sahle-Work was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to replace Francois Fall of Guinea, who resigned.

 


Top UN official visits scene of recent violence in Central African Republic (29.06.2009)

The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR) has visited a town that has been the scene of recent deadly clashes in a bid to explore how to shore up security in the region. Victor Angelo, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the mission, known as MINURCAT, went to the northern CAR town of Birao which was attacked by armed rebels on 6 and 21 June.
