Return of piracy on Somalia waters to push up costs

Somali piracy has almost completely stopped

Security Council adopts resolution to keep pirates at bay

The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution to combat the continuing threat of piracy off the coast of Somalia, as shipping and protection measures to keep vessels safe, have returned to levels not seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

EU NAVFOR Atalanta: new Operation Commander appointed

Today, Vice Admiral José M. Núñez Torrente was appointed Operation Commander of EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta, starting on 21 April 2021. He takes command from Admiral Eugenio Díaz del Río Jáudenes.

Mandate of operation ATALANTA expanded

Today, Rear Admiral lgnacio Villanueva Serrano was appointed as new force commander for the EU naval operation Atalanta. His mandate will start on 17 March. … EU NAVFOR operation Atalanta, contributes to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast.

UN adopts resolution renewing authorisation for Somalia anti-piracy measures

The Security Council today renewed for 12 months the authorization for States and regional organizations cooperating with Somalia to use all necessary means to fight piracy off the coast of the east African country. Unanimously adopting resolution 2500 (2019), the Council decided to renew that authorization, set out in paragraph 14 of resolution 2442 (2018), without significant changes.

Strengthening regional co-operation to up maritime security
