Strengthening or Repurposing EU Civilian Crisis Management?


In the coming months, the EU is set to create a so-called "Civilian CSDP Compact" in order to augment the civilian capabilities of its missions under the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy. In its current form, the Compact would focus the missions' work on security issues like migration control, border management and countering terrorism. In his article „The Civilian CSDP Compact: Strengthening or Repurposing EU Civilian Crisis Management?“ for the Italian Istituto Affari Internazionali Tobias Pietz argues that this new approach would not only overstretch the missions' resources but would also do little for the long-term stabilization of host countries.
