CSDP and the Protection of Cultural Heritage

13.11.2019

In a new "Commentary" at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, Tobias Pietz and Maximilian Schmidtke explore the current plans and recent lessons on how CSDP missions could contribute to the protection of cultural heritage. They come to the conclusion that while the issue should play a cross-cutting role for missions there is a risk of high local expectations regarding the actual physical protection of heritage sites. Instead, the ongoing mission in Iraq could be a role model where protection of cultural heritage is a sub-issue with clear links to both organized crime and the financing of terrorism.
