“Peace in Afghanistan – Utopia or realistic prospect?“ is the title of a panel discussion by the German Atlantic Association that took place on 14th May, at which Dr. Almut Wieland-Karimi discussed the current developments in Afghanistan with Umer M. Daudzai, Speaker of the Leadership Council of Reconciliation for Afghanistan which was found in April 2019, Andreas Krüger, Head of Division Afghanistan/Pakistan at the Federal Foreign Office and Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann, former Senior Civilian Representative at NATO in Afghanistan. The Panel was hosted by Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Joachim Giessmann, managing director of Berghof Foundation. Points of discussion were the recently held Loya Jirga, the current talks in Doha between the United States and the Taliban, the precarious security environment, especially for humanitarian actors, and the meaning of an intra-afghan dialogue.
