ZIF panel about CSDP missions and mediation processes at the EU Mediation Community of Practice Meeting 2020

This year’s EU Mediation Community of Practice Meeting jointly organized by the European External Action Service and MediatEUr is taking place as virtual open space from June 15 – 17. The event brings together representatives from specialist organizations in the field of peace mediation, as well as from member states and international organizations, who exchange and network to further develop the field of peace mediation within EU foreign policy.

ZIF organized a panel on the topic “Out of the shadow: leveraging the full potential of CSDP missions in supporting peace mediation”.

The participants exchanged views on the actual and potentially possible contributions of CSDP missions to EU mediation efforts. The discussion was enriched by concrete experiences of members of the ZIF Expert Pool currently deployed to EUCAP Somalia and EUMM Georgia.

During a lively discussion, participants agreed that CSDP missions are often already indirectly contributing to mediation efforts. At the same time, it was pointed out that the various mediation initiatives and contributions by EU actors must be coordinated more closely in the sense of the "integrated approach". Finally, a number of recommendations for the new version of the EU Concept on Mediation were developed and discussed.
