Course Description

The Re-HEAT course is conceptualized as a refresher of the classic HEAT course. Thus, HEAT-topics are addressed again from new perspectives and complemented by selected new topics. Like the HEAT course, the Re-HEAT course sensitises participants to potential threats in the field and teaches techniques and instruments to (re-)act appropriately. In simulations and exercises, participants apply what they have learned and practice how to act in threat situations.

Learning Objectives

The aim of this new course is to refresh the knowledge gained in the HEAT course. This means it aims to further promote civilian actors’ understanding of proactive security measures before, during and after deployment to a conflict area. At the same time, participants familiarise themselves with techniques and measures to avoid and/or handle potentially dangerous situations.

Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to experience and to analyse different dangerous situations and to test the limits of their personal stress tolerance.

Target Audience

The training aims primarily at (future) civilian peace operations and humanitarian operations staff in low, medium and high-risk environments. The Re-HEAT course exclusively targets participants who have already participated in a previous HEAT course.

Within the responsibilities deriving from the principle of duty of care, we consider the validity of HEAT certificates to be 5 years maximum. To avoid a simple course repetition, we have created a complementary refresher HEAT course for all those experts who have already attended the classic HEAT at some stage in their professional lives and want to refresh their HEAT experience.

Course Content

  • Reflection of past safety and security-related experiences
  • Personal security in the field, situational awareness of threats and risks
  • Residential security: accommodation selection criteria, preventive security measures and robbery prevention
  • Fire protection, preventive and reactive measures, rescue from fire
  • Mission/trip planning, essential considerations and actions
  • Safety and security procedures for vehicle movement
  • Orientation in the field: map reading, use of a compass and GPS;
  • Communication in the field: NATO alphabet, prowords and radio procedures
  • Stress management, resilience, mental health
  • First aid in the field: refresher of basic means and tools, improvised stabilisation and transport

ZIF Trainings:

ZIF Trainings are practice-oriented and reflect the operational reality of peace operations and (post-)conflict areas through exercises, role plays and scenario-based courses. Moreover, our trainings focus on the main areas of competence outlined in the ZIF Concept “Civilian Expert”. Additionally, we base our courses on contemporary concepts of adult education and peer learning. We try to create a joint learning space where participants and the training team can exchange freely and critically, and which provides room for self-reflection. Another important goal of our courses is to encourage a change of perspective. One way of achieving this is by mainstreaming the comprehensive approach (civilian, police, military), which is made possible through our cooperation within the German Training Partner Platform.
