Monitoring and Verification

The presence of international observers in conflict areas serves, among other things, to monitor ceasefires and peace agreements. In addition to military and police, civilian personnel can also be assigned to carry out these tasks, as is the case in the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.

You can expect to be involved in the following tasks:

  • Monitoring borders and reporting on relevant events and developments;
  • Monitoring ceasefire agreements and reporting on ceasefire violations;
  • Monitoring individual components of peace agreements;
  • Establishing a visible international presence;
  • Promoting confidence-building measures, such as exchange of information;
  • Early-warning measures.
