ZIF world map of peace operations 2023/24 published

| ZIF publication

The new edition of our world map of peace operations provides up-to-date information and figures on missions of the UN, EU, OSCE and other organizations as well as on the respective German participation of the Bundeswehr, police and civilian experts.

This year, in addition to updating the figures and information, we have also redesigned the world map visually. The product has been adapted to ZIF's corporate look and its modern design also makes it suitable for hanging up in the office or at home.

In terms of content, the map shows current developments in the field of peace operations: Compared to the previous year, the total number of peace operations personnel has remained roughly constant at 135,000. However, there will be a significant reduction in 2024 with the end of the UN missions in Mali and Sudan as well as the planned reduction of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the AU mission in Somalia.

"There are, however, also new peace operations due to the EU's increased involvement," says Tobias von Gienanth, Senior Researcher at ZIF. "Four new EU missions - in Armenia, the Republic of Moldova, the Gulf of Guinea and Niger - can be found on the map. Although these are significantly smaller and more specialized than the closed UN missions, they show that the instrument of peace operations remains agile even in geopolitically difficult times."

Our world map is available in classic printed format in German or English - orders can be sent to research@zif-berlin.org
