In my position as a logistics officer,

I gained insight into the work of the Civilian Planning and Conduct Capabilities – the central planning body for EU operations in Brussels. Even as a short-term expert, I was able to work on both tactical and strategic issues. For instance, I was involved in planning new operations in the Horn of Africa, South Sudan and Niger. We transferred key assets, such as cars, generators and security equipment, from downsizing missions to new operational theatres. At the conceptual level, I developed recommendations on streamlining administrative tasks and enhancing delivery.

Why a peace operation?

For me, it was important to demonstrate how much the administration of peace operations can learn from the private sector. This includes more skilled procurement, more efficient decision making, or using economies of scale in an effort to standardise and harmonise administrative procedures.

I was motivated by the fact

that colleagues in Brussels were open to new ideas and allowed me – as an individual – to contribute to change in complex institutions. Even though change was slower than I was used to in my 25-year career to date!

Cost efficiency is a key factor for peace operations – this is where I can contribute my expertise.“
