Millions of lives could be lost to hunger in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), amid escalating conflict and worsening COVID-19 transmission, the UN emergency food relief agency has warned, urging the international community to step up support for the African nation.
South Africa, along with Malawi and Tanzania, the three Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries making up the sole UN peacekeeping force with an offensive mandate – the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) in the Democratic Republic of Congo – met virtually this week to consider reconfiguration of the brigade.
More than 1,300 people were killed in the first six months of the year by armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), three times more than in the same period in 2019, according to the United Nations.
Twelve people were killed in 48 hours in the troubled Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, an official said on Tuesday, where militia attacks have left more than 1,000 dead in recent years.
