The head of Sudan's army has told troops it will press to take more ground after its most significant advance in an 11-month-old war against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as a charity warned of a rising risk of hunger-linked deaths.

The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a key resolution on Sudan, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the war-torn country during the month of Ramadan, which begins on Sunday.

The Security Council today extended through 12 March 2025 the mandate of the Panel of Experts charged with assisting its Sudan sanctions committee, requesting a final report on its findings and recommendations by 13 January 2025.

Nearly 11 months since rival generals declared war in Sudan, UN humanitarians warned on Wednesday that the conflict risks triggering “the world’s worst hunger crisis”.

The Sudanese army has agreed to engage in indirect negotiations with the rival Rapid Support Forces through the mediation of Libya and Turkey, as the Sudanese conflict nears its one-year anniversary next month.

The United Nations has had to limit its work in Darfur to cross-border operations from Chad, but last week the U.N.'s World Food Program (WFP) country director Eddie Rowe told reporters that "authorities have restricted the Chad cross-border operation."

The armed conflict in Sudan has resulted in thousands of civilians killed, millions displaced, property looted, and children conscripted, as fighting has spread to more regions of the country, says a wide-ranging report from the UN Human Rights Office.

France is to host a humanitarian conference to provide aid to war-torn Sudan in April, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné said this week.

Civilians continue to bear the brunt as the war between rival militaries in Sudan spreads into new areas, driving displacement and hunger while exposing communities to deadly diseases, UN humanitarians warned on Tuesday.
