The displacement crisis prompted by ongoing conflict in Sudan continues unabated with nearly six million people forced out of their homes and women and children making up nearly nine in 10 of those uprooted, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Wednesday. 

Iran and Sudan agreed on Monday to restore diplomatic relations, both said in a joint statement, seven years after they were severed and three months after a meeting between their foreign ministers.

Sudan's government on Wednesday rejected the United Nations Human Rights Council (OHCHR)'s draft resolution proposing the formation of a three-member investigation committee to address violations and crimes during the conflict in Sudan.

The heads of Sudan's rival military factions gave competing addresses to the United Nations on Thursday, one from the podium at U.N. headquarters in New York and the other in a rare video recording from an undisclosed location. Army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, speaking at the United Nations following a string of foreign trips, called on the international community to designate the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization and to counter its sponsors outside Sudan's borders.

Civilians continuing paying a heavy price as the “senseless violence” between rival militaries continues in Sudan, the UN’s political affairs chief said on Wednesday. Rosemary DiCarlo called on the national army and so-called Rapid Support Forces to lay down their arms, more than five months after they began facing off in the streets of Khartoum.

Malnutrition and disease in the midst of a violent conflict have claimed thousands of young lives. UNICEF has warned that many thousands more are likely to die.

The UN special envoy for Sudan – who was declared unwelcome by the country’s military rulers – has resigned in a final speech to the United Nations Security Council, warning that the conflict between Sudan’s rival military leaders “could be morphing into a full-scale civil war.”
