[…] The head of the Sovereign Council travelled to New York on Wednesday to take part in the 77th session of the General Assembly despite, the decision of the international community to stop political and economic support to Sudan after his coup against the civilian government in October 2021.
The Sudanese security forces used excessive force to prevent anti-coup protesters from reaching the presidential palace on Tuesday. Also, they arrested dozens of youth demonstrators.
UNITAMS chief and UN Special Representatives, Volker Perthes, warned that amid “continuing deterioration” on a socio-economic level, the overall situation in Sudan, “will continue to worsen unless a political situation is found to restore a credible, fully functioning civilian-led government”
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says most of the 380 people were killed in the conflict-wracked Darfur region.

The first US ambassador to Sudan in 25 years arrived in the country on Wednesday in the latest sign of improved relations between the two nations after the United States removed Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The trial of senior Janjaweed leader Ali Kushayb – the first prosecution to get underway at the request of the UN Security Council – represents “a glimmer of hope for justice in Darfur,” Sudan, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor on the case told the chamber on Tuesday.
Hundreds of Sudanese rallied outside a Khartoum conference hall in a show of support for a political initiative backed by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who last year led a military coup. The initiative, known as “The Call of Sudan’s People”, was launched last month by renowned Sufi religious leader Al-Tayeb Al-Jed with the declared aim of ending Sudan’s political crisis.
