Rule of Law

Programmes promoting rule of law are a central element of democratisation. They encompass measures aimed at establishing and consolidating rule-of-law structures. The basis for measures in this field are principles of rule of law such as separation of powers, independent judicial institutions, protection of basic rights and administrative legality. The three essential starting points for rule-of-law programmes in peace operations are a functioning justice and judiciary administration system, as well as a functioning police and corrections system.

You can expect to be involved in the following tasks:

  • Promoting rule of law through advising and supporting the judiciary system, police and corrections system;
  • Advising on constitutional issues;
  • Providing support for judicial reforms;
  • Providing support to the establishment of independent courts;
  • Promoting the development of independent legal institutions;
  • Advising on the harmonisation of draft legislation with international standards;
  • Observing court cases;
  • Training judges, lawyers and corrections officers;
  • Supporting and developing anti-corruption programmes;
  • Informing citizens about their rights.
