UN envoy urges more aid for Haiti

Speaking from a donors' conference in Brazil, Edmond Mulet told the BBC that assistance was needed despite Haiti's new democratically elected government. … Since the election of Rene Preval, the security situation in the capital, Port-au-Prince, has shown signs of improvement and the new president has reduced political tension by showing willingness to talk to all sides.

Haiti's Preval picks close ally as PM-designate

UN should stay long enough to consolidate Haiti’s progress, mission chief says

Annan appoints Guatemalan diplomat as new head of UN mission

(Quelle: UN News) Secretary-General Kofi Annan has informed the Security Council that he will appoint the Guatemalan ambassador to the European Union, Edmond Mulet, as his new Special Representative in Haiti and head of the UN Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) there, a United Nations spokesman said today. Mr. Mulet, who succeeds Juan Gabriel Valdés of Chile, has served as ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg since June 2000, negotiating tourism, trade and economic cooperation, as well as political issues.

Preval sworn in as President

René Préval devra former une coalition de centre gauche

(Quelle: Le Monde) Avec plus du tiers des sièges au Parlement, le parti L'Espoir, du président élu René Préval (centre gauche), est arrivé en tête des élections législatives, dont le deuxième tour a eu lieu le 21 avril en Haïti. Formé en 2005 pour soutenir la candidature de M. Préval, L'Espoir a emporté 11 sièges de sénateur, sur un total de 30, et 20 des 60 postes de député déjà attribués, selon des résultats portant sur plus de 90 % des suffrages. Deux partis de centre gauche, l'Organisation du peuple en lutte (OPL) et la Fusion des sociaux-démocrates, arrivent en deuxième et troisième position.

UN envoy hails parliamentary elections while denouncing violent incidents
