Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said on Tuesday that he would ask his government to approve naming a new Jewish settlement in the Golan Heights for President Trump, in appreciation of the American leader’s proclamation recognizing Israel’s authority over the long-disputed territory.
The United States faced pushback from the European Union and in the UN Security Council for President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The EU Foreign Affairs Department said on March 27 it was the "unanimous position" of all 28 member states to honor the UN resolution that identifies the Golan Heights as occupied territory and rejects the seizure of land by force.
President Donald Trump has officially recognised Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, seized from Syria in 1967, in a move hailed as "historic" by Israel's prime minister.
