Thematic Session "Mediation and Radical Actors: Challenges and Entry-Points"

On May 12, ZIF, in collaboration with the EEAS Mediation Support Team and building on the virtual training and coaching program for members of the EEAS Pool of Mediators conducted in 2020, hosted an exclusive event on the topic of possible mediation and dialogue approaches with radical actors.
In the context of peace mediation, mediators are often confronted not only with a variety of different conflict parties, but also with radicalized groups and actors. In an interactive session, members of the EEAS Pool of Mediators, as well as invited EU Special Envoys and Special Representatives, received expert input on the peculiarities of different radical groups as well as the opportunities and challenges of engaging them in dialogue and mediation activities. Particularly promising approaches were elaborated in order to identify favourable circumstances and effective methods for the inclusion of radical groups in mediation processes.
Veronique Dudouet, Senior Advisor at the Berghof Foundation, provided an in-depth expert contribution on the topic which was complemented by subsequent group work which enabled participants to apply what they had learned using the Process Design technique. A concluding round in a collegial atmosphere allowed for a lively exchange on the topic of the session, complemented by the diverse work contexts and experiences of the participants.
