The experience of recent years has shown that climatic distress plays a central role in many of today’s conflicts. While at the beginning the question was about the “if”, it is today about the “when, where and how” climate change is impacting different variables and drivers of instability and conflict. How can the international community respond? One of the recommendations from experts (e.g. during the Challenges Forum 2021) is to strengthen capacities and skills of peace operations to understand and analyze climate-related security risks in order to contribute to crisis prevention and sustaining peace.

With the new course "Introduction to Climate and Environmental Security", the Berlin Center for international peace operations has created a training designed to address these issues and equip mission personnel with the necessary knowledge and tools.

The tutored 3,5 days course takes place from 1-4 November 2022 and is organized in cooperation with adelphi – a leading think tank that provides expertise to governments and international organizations to effectively address the security and fragility risks that can emerge from climate and environmental change. The course offers the possibility to gain knowledge on the links between climate change, environment and conflict and to practice different analysis tools (climate-fragility hot spot mapping, pressure map and conflict tree) for climate-sensitive programming in the mission, using different case studies.

Applications for the course are now open until 11 September. For further information please visit the course page
